Apple Maps launches on the web to take on Google

Apple Maps is finally available on the web, and the beta, which launched Wednesday afternoon, means you can now get driving and walking directions, as well as view ratings and reviews, from the web version of Apple Maps on your desktop or mobile browser.

Apple Maps is available on the beta.maps.apple.com site and lets you do most of the things you can do in the iOS app, including viewing guides, ordering food directly from Maps, exploring cities, getting information about businesses, and more. The web version of Apple Maps is currently available in English only and is compatible with Safari and Chrome on Mac and iPad, and Chrome and Edge on Windows PC. Apple plans to roll out support for other languages, browsers, and platforms in the future. Apple says that any developer using MapKit JS tools can link to Maps on the web.

Previously, a version of Apple Maps was available on the web through the work of developers using the API to create maps for sites like DuckDuckGo. Official availability on the web would be a big expansion and could help it compete with Google's, which has been available through web browsers for years.

But other open-source alternatives are also aiming to compete with Google Maps and Apple Maps. On Wednesday, the Overture Maps Foundation, which is backed by Amazon, Meta and Microsoft, released its first mapping dataset, making the information freely available to developers to use in their apps.
