Google Pixel 9 and 9 Pro rumours: Coming August 13, new design, Fold 2 confirmed
The Pixel 9 series is likely to arrive much sooner than expected. Google has invited the press to its Pixel hardware event on August 13. The company's Pixel 8 and 8 Pro were released in October last year, but it seems that Google wants to release the smartphone before Apple unveils the iPhone 16 series. All of Google's smartphones offer solid performance, solid software support, and innovative AI-based features, but the recent $499 Pixel 8A has trimmed down some of the specs to make it more affordable.
We've now got some key information about the upcoming product series from both Google's own official social media channels and the usual leakers and tipsters who have been showing off renders and leaked specs for the past few months.
We'll be updating this story as we get closer to the Pixel 9 launch, so keep checking back.

08:16 August 13, 2024 Launch
Google typically releases new Pixel devices in October (as was the case with the Pixel 8 and Pixel 7 series), but the company officially sent out invites for its Pixel hardware event on August 13, teasing several products on the same day. It's not clear why Google chose to change the launch date, but it's quite possible that it's to get its smartphones in the public's eye before Apple unveils its iPhone 16 series, scheduled for September.
The above teaser, posted to the company's Made by Google YouTube channel, focuses on the Pixel 9 Pro Fold, showing off the new design and camera layout before confirming an August 13th release date.
Even if the announcement is made early, there's no guarantee the phone will be available for purchase that day — Google could show off the new phone at its Mountain View, Calif., headquarters, but it won't hit store shelves until later this year. Either way, we probably won't have to wait long to find out.
Three (or four) Pixel 9 models
Rumors have been circulating that the Pixel 9 smartphone will come in three models instead of the usual two since Android Authority announced it would be available in late 2022. The base model Pixel 9 is still expected to arrive, but the flagship Pro series could come in two versions, a larger and smaller model.

The smaller version will reportedly be similar in size to the base model but will feature higher-end cameras that are usually only found on the larger version, while the 9 Pro XL (rumored to be called that) will have the same high-end specs but a larger display.
This more accurately reflects Apple's strategy, which typically includes a base iPhone model plus two Pro phones of different sizes with improved cameras.
The fourth model is the Pixel 9 Pro Fold, which is an update to the original Pixel Fold that launched in June 2023. We were hoping to hear more about Google's new foldable smartphone at I/O, but the company only talked about AI updates and new foldable hardware was noticeably absent. We were hoping to get some hints about the phone in early June, but Google's latest teaser video confirms that we'll have to wait a little longer for its unveiling in August.
iPhone-like design
Speaking of iPhones, the Pixel 9 series may receive a design change that mirrors some of the aesthetics of the iPhone 15. Google's official X account posted a video that clearly shows the back of the Pixel 9 Pro, confirming the flat metal sides and updated camera bar seen in previous leaks. Previous renders supposedly obtained by prominent tipster OnLeaks and published by MySmartPrice showed these same features, with the Pixel 9 sporting a similar look to that seen on the latest iPhones.

Another big physical change shown off in Google's video is the camera bar on the back. Previously, the camera bar was a single bar that stretched across the entire width of the phone, connecting to both edges. The video confirms that the camera bar will instead be a separate oval island in the middle, with the Pixel 9 Pro Fold featuring two camera “pills” housed within the raised island.
A rendering image that appears to be the Pixel 9.
MySmartPrice/OnLeaks
The rumor mill has not specified display sizes, but most indications are that the base Pixel 9 will be around 6.1 inches, with the 9 Pro expected to be a similar size. The 9 Pro XL will be larger, at around 6.8 inches, matching the size of the current Pixel 8 Pro.
Similar Cameras
The full camera specs haven't been leaked yet, so there's still very little for photographers like me to get excited about. Rumors about a third size for the Pixel 9 family suggest that Google could bring the same triple-camera setup (including a telephoto zoom) to the smaller Pixel 9 Pro, which is currently only available on the larger Pixel 8 Pro device.
This is great news for people who prefer a smaller phone but still want the best features, and it remains to be seen whether Google will follow Apple's lead and add some unique features to its largest phone (for example, the iPhone 15 Pro Max has a 5x optical zoom option that the smaller iPhone 15 Pro doesn't have).
The Pixel 8 and 8 Pro offer decent performance, but it's not at the top of the heap.

Google is almost certain to unveil its latest generation of in-house developed processor, which will likely be called Tensor G4. Google's Tensor processors aren't the best in terms of raw power, but the company boasts that they're specifically tuned for on-device AI. Here's hoping that Google's next Tensor chips will do the same.
Android 15 launch
Google always uses the Pixel series to show off the latest Android features, so it's safe to assume that the Pixel 9 series will launch with the latest Android 15. The second beta of Android 15 was released at Google I/O in May, and early developer previews showed off new settings with improved privacy and camera controls.
According to Android Authority, one big new feature could be the addition of satellite messaging, which would allow the Pixel series to compete with Apple's Emergency SOS feature, which uses satellite messaging.
The Pixel 8 series launched with Android 14. The Pixel 9 will almost certainly launch with Android 15.

Additionally, with Google's Gemini set to come standard on all new Pixel models, it's safe to expect an increased focus on generative AI features. We also hope that Google will continue to offer at least seven years of software support, as it did with the Pixel 8, which would make the Pixel 9 series safe to use into 2031.
Price Increase
There are no rumors yet about pricing for the Pixel 9 series, but a slight price increase is possible: the Pixel 8A isn't priced higher than the Pixel 7A in the US (both models start at $499), but in the UK it has increased from £449 to £499. The 8A's price increase doesn't mean the Pixel 9 series will be more expensive, but it does suggest that Google isn't shying away from raising prices, at least for UK shoppers.
