Scientists' indoor solar cell innovations maximize use of light energy

Chemists at Kaunas University of Technology (KTU) in Lithuania have synthesized a material that could improve photovoltaic cells for indoor use, allowing them to generate electricity even in low light conditions and be integrated into a variety of electronic devices.

Their research is published in ACS Applied Materials & Interfaces.

The consumption of oil and gas contributes to rising temperatures, which contributes to the global climate change that is now known as the climate crisis. To address this issue, efforts are being made to harness renewable and environmentally friendly energy sources such as wind, hydro and solar power.

“While wind and hydro energy are expensive and have location-dependent constraints, solar energy is flexible, efficient and relatively cheap. However, energy is lost every day from indoor light sources and natural light entering through windows,” says Juozas Vydas Glaurebius, professor at KTU's Faculty of Chemical Technology and head of the Materials Chemistry research group.

According to Professor Glaulebius, this problem could be solved by using indoor solar power, which produces electricity even in low light conditions.

“For indoor use, perovskite solar cells can be integrated into mobile phones, flashlights and other electronic devices to generate electricity under artificial light. Using Internet of Things (IoT) technologies, this electricity can be used to efficiently control the operation of devices and optimize energy consumption,” said Dr. Asta Davlien, senior researcher at KTU's Materials Chemistry Research Group.

With the rapid development of IoT technology, the market for indoor photovoltaic cells has expanded significantly, so high-performance, low-cost and versatile indoor PV cells are the key to filling this market gap.

Dr. Dubrien has synthesized a series of new, efficient hole-transporting thiazoles.[5,4-d]Thiazole derivatives for indoor perovskite solar cells. The main function of that layer is to selectively transport holes (positive charge carriers) while blocking electrons (negative charge carriers). This selective charge transport helps in reducing recombination losses and improves the overall efficiency of the solar cell.

“An ideal hole-transporting semiconductor for these applications should have high hole mobility and good matching with the energy levels of the adjacent layers,” explains Dr. D'Abrien.

Thiazole[5,4-d]Thiazole derivatives containing triphenylamine donor fragments synthesized by KTU researcher Dr. Dabulien have been used by a research team from Ming Chi University of Technology (Taiwan) to develop indoor perovskite solar cells. The organic semiconductor developed by KTU achieved a power conversion efficiency of 37.0% under 3000K LED (1,000 lx) illumination. Research shows the great potential of thiazoles.[5,4-d]Thiazole derivatives for enhancing the efficiency of perovskite solar cells.

The proposed innovation in indoor solar cells is the result of research by an international team of scientists: researchers from KTU Materials Chemistry Research Group developed and synthesized an organic semiconductor that efficiently transports positive charges and studied its properties.

The theoretical study of the new compounds was carried out by scientists at King Abdullah University of Science and Technology (Saudi Arabia). Researchers at Ming Chi University of Technology in Taiwan have fabricated and characterized perovskite solar cells for indoor use.
