Google is testing changes to Google One subscription tiers that could affect Google Photos users.

As uncovered in a new Android Authority report by app experts Assemble Debug, code within the latest version of the Google Photos Android app includes references to a brand new, unannounced Google One Lite subscription plan. This addition suggests that Google Photos users in particular may be seeing changes to how Google charges them for some of its premium services.

According to reports, text within the latest Google Photos app reads (emphasis added):

<string name="photos_cloudstorage_g1_lite_plan">Google One Lite plan</string>

Google One is a subscription-based service from Google that offers users cloud-based storage space across their Google Drive, Gmail, and Google Photos accounts. It comes in tiered subscription plans based on the amount of cloud storage included; however, there is currently no Lite plan.

What does the Google One Lite plan offer?

So what do we know about the new Lite plan? Currently, we expect this plan to coexist alongside Google's existing Standard, Basic, Premium, and AI Premium plans, which will continue to be referenced in your code as they have been in the past.

The name Lite suggests that this unannounced plan will be the new entry-level option for Google One subscribers. This means that the plan is expected to include the 15GB of free storage currently offered to free users, along with some unnamed extras. It also likely won't be positioned too closely to the current 100GB basic storage tier, so we can assume it will include anywhere between 15GB and 100GB of storage, as long as Google keeps the 15GB quota for free users.

This new plan is likely to be an especially interesting option for Google Photos users, given that it first appeared in the Google Photos app. It's also possible that the new plan will simply give users access to premium Google Photos features without having to purchase any additional storage beyond the included 15GB.

For example, Google Photos users are currently limited to 10 Magic Editor saves per month unless they have a Pixel device or the 2TB Google One premium plan. Google could use the Lite plan as a cost-effective way to sell additional Magic Editor saves, and perhaps other server-based AI features, to users who don't need 2TB of storage. Another possibility is that Google plans to implement significant changes to its current Google One plans to accommodate the new Lite tier.

Google's 100GB basic plan is currently priced at $1.99 per month, with the 2TB premium option costing $9.99 per month. A 2TB AI premium tier is also available, which adds access to Google's Gemini Advanced features for a total price of $19.99 per month.

Other plans are available to existing Google One subscribers, including a 200GB plan and larger plans ranging from 5TB to 30TB, but these plans are not available to new customers upon sign-up. Importantly, these 5TB+ plans are not available with Gemini Advanced, meaning users will have to downgrade or set up a second account to access Google's premium AI features. This unusual situation makes it very likely that Google will introduce a range of other new subscription options soon, perhaps with the Pixel 9 series in the coming weeks.
