OpenAI launches SearchGPT, a potential Google challenger

OpenAI, the developer of the popular ChatGPT, is releasing a test version of a search engine that cites sources including news from its content business partners.

SearchGPT will summarize websites, including news sites, and allow users to ask follow-up questions, as ChatGPT already does.

This is a direct challenge to Google, which has been trying to apply generative AI to web search.

OpenAI says it plans to integrate SearchGPT into ChatGPT in the future. While ChatGPT can already perform web searches using Bing, SearchGPT aims to be an AI-assisted web search.

OpenAI hasn't said whether it will partner with an existing search engine provider (as it currently does with Bing for ChatGPT) or build its own web crawling and indexing system.

“If you opt out of generative AI training, your site may still appear in search results,” OpenAI said in its new SearchGPT announcement.

OpenAI claims that SearchGPT will make web searches faster and easier, but the technology is still in its early stages, so its effectiveness for AI-powered searches remains unclear.

OpenAI stressed that it especially wants to work with content creators: “We're committed to a vibrant ecosystem of publishers and creators,” OpenAI said in a news release. “We want to help users discover publisher sites and experiences while providing more choice in search.”

In a statement in OpenAI's press release, Nicholas Thompson, CEO of The Atlantic (an existing content partner of OpenAI), expressed optimism:

“AI search will be one of the key ways people use the internet, and in the early stages it's crucial that we build the technology in a way that values, respects and protects journalism and publishers,” he said. “We look forward to partnering with OpenAI in this process and creating new ways for readers to discover The Atlantic.”

OpenAI's SearchGPT is currently being tested with a small number of users and publishers.
