“We start by estimating road width, which is extremely complex as India's road network is vast and diverse. Using these road width estimates, we fine-tuned our existing AI routing algorithms to help 4-wheel vehicles avoid narrow roads wherever possible, without significantly impacting travel time or distance. Sometimes taking narrow roads is unavoidable, especially when it's the only optimal way to get to your destination. That's why we're adding clear callouts to Maps' directions and navigation screens to alert you to narrow sections on your route, so you can proceed with caution or choose an alternative route.

With the variety of road types in India, this is a complex challenge and we don't always get the results right. But we are committed to continuously learning and improving this feature based on what we see in the real world and user feedback. This week, we will start rolling out the feature on Android devices in eight cities: Hyderabad, Bengaluru, Chennai, Coimbatore, Indore, Bhopal, Bhubaneswar, and Guwahati, and we will bring it to iOS and other cities soon.

Drive over flyovers with confidence

Flyovers are common in many cities across India. If you're in an unfamiliar part of a city, it can be difficult to determine whether your route requires you to take an overpass or stay on a service road. That's why we're introducing a new feature in Google Maps that will alert you to overpasses along your suggested route. This feature helps you predict upcoming overpasses and prepare to board one.
