The increasing number of five new “digital nomads” working abroad in remote areas shares how they did it

Coronaviruses have affected the world in so many ways. In April, the UK Census Bureau revealed that 49.2 percent of the adults currently in service work from home because of the social distance measures in place.

Since then, companies such as Twitter, Shopify, and Slack have made sure that employees can work from home. Meanwhile, countries such as Barbados, Estonia and Bermuda are taking advantage of this trend to introduce new digital nomad visas.

On paper, it seems like an easy decision. Exchanging gray skies for British friendliness abroad for months or a year usually involved quitting the job or scrutinizing the job to get a vacation. Now you can do it without even taking a vacation.

But what is the practical utility of a stick to work from the other side of the world? The costs, logistics, and potential loneliness of moving elsewhere may not be known to anyone to take into account, especially during a pandemic. With all this, how many people are actually traveling abroad to work? More than expected, the recent solicitation of direct letters of recommendation has resulted in far more articles than expected.

For Dimitra Lily Paputsakis, PR account manager at Siren Comms, moving to Greece to work in a remote location was made easier by having a family. I am from Greece and have a family so the opportunity to spend more time with them was the usual 10 day holiday.

Having an office in support of her choice also helped. They found that mentally this was a difficult time and having a family outside the city really helped. Their main requirement for workers leaving their country was that they ensure that they can work efficiently and have access to good Wi-Fi and telephone connections.

Not that it was all swings and roundabouts. Paputsakis said border restrictions change every day, making traveling to Greece very stressful, but being able to work here remotely is great.

In contrast, former British-based editor Julia Buckley was okay because I lived in a household shielded by someone, so I had to shield everyone, and I’m at high risk too. , It’s getting harder and harder to think that half of the country is out of the blockade and my friends and colleagues return to normal while I’m stuck.

Buckley used to live in Italy as a student, fluent in Italian, and planned to spend a few months between domestic jobs in 2019 to improve her language skills. It didn’t work out in time, and when I started a new job this year, I gave up on that dream and thought it could never happen after Brexit.

But in June of this year, Buckley asked his boss if he could work from Italy while the office was working from home. Buckley currently lives in Venice and she has some close friends. In a city that has been struggling financially during the pandemic, while her income helps stabilize the economy in a small way, rents are falling because tourists aren’t around to raise prices.

Regarding the move, it was very easy, Buckley said. It took me a day to find an apartment, but as soon as the FCO restrictions were lifted, I booked a flight.

I don’t go out to restaurants or bars because I’m still at high risk, but the Italians are very protective of the old man, so I followed the rules and made friends here faster than before. I feel like I have found a home forever.

Barbados and Bermuda are attractive proposals, but new remote workers in the UK have chosen Europe as their destination of choice given their accessibility, lack of current visa requirements, and relative health. It seems that

But for others, undertaking the mantle of the newly available digital nomads didn’t even need to leave the UK.

Journalist Hannah Summers was planning a camper vacation in Scotland this summer. When Covid hit, we were just desperate to get out of the London flat. So when the trip coincided with a great job opportunity, Summers decided to combine both. I worked 3-4 days a week on the road from VW California.

It was surprisingly fine, she pondered. I think it taught me a little discipline and flexibility. I have always been quite valuable about tidy desks.

Using a camper is cheaper, but one of the drawbacks of such remote work is the need to connect data to mobile. Summers said I felt the value. At breaks and at the end of the day, walk your dog on the beautiful empty beaches, not on London’s streets.

I don’t think I can do it in the long run because I think flexible work tends to blend work together. The more downside is probably that you can’t really take a break or switch off. The act of balancing that.

For Anna Sebastian, bar manager of The Artesian, one of London’s top hotels, working remotely doesn’t think that after all, working in hospitality usually requires physical presence. It was an opportunity.

However, after being worn, Celebrity has traveled cheaply to Europe on a road trip and conducted a consultant project during her trip to supplement her income. She is currently in Portugal.

Unfortunately, the end of Sebastian’s trip is coming to an end. I actually said I would be back to work on September 1st, but she is now an avid fan of remote work.

If my job didn’t work, she would go crazy when I did it full-time. I took an airplane. All I needed was a laptop and good WiFi. The transition was very easy as everything is currently in Zoom.

She added that there is such a large community of people working abroad. So many people hate returning to their offices until 2021, renting a villa and setting up a hot, cheap camp somewhere.

Living cheaply here. London is my hometown, where I was born, but London is expensive and your money is far from here.

Greg Dickinson, a member of Telegraph Travels, also soaked his toes, which had been in Amsterdam for a month, into a remote working life.

I’ve always dreamed of living abroad for a while, but Kahunas never took the plunge to do my job. A new job from home culture was a great opportunity to do this for a while without losing my job.

Amsterdam was my city of choice as it was close to England (1 hour flight), so it was reported that English was spoken extensively and that life felt more or less normal.

Due to the time difference, I felt long in the morning before work started. In the evening, Dickinson walked to a local bakery near Jordan, meeting foreign friends, playing football, and swimming in many parts of the city. .. The quality of life is much better than living in London.

The cost was what brought Dickinson home: I had to go back to not go bankrupt myself (I was still renting in London). One of the factors was the looming potential quarantine, and the number of incidents in the Netherlands began to increase. Fortunately, there was a return date on Friday evening, about 8 hours before the quarantine rules came into force at 4 am on Saturday, August 15.

“Quality of life [in Amserdam] I don’t want to admit, much better than that in London: getty

Regardless of experience or location, everyone agrees that remote work should stay here even after social distance has ended. Paputsakis knows that many in the industry and friends in other industries are already exploring processes that enable remote work. I don’t think traditional workplaces will have the same settings as they did before Covid.

I think that the good thing about Covid-19 is that some companies were eventually forced to adopt flexible time zones and not be in the office to actually work, Summers agreed. ..

Buckley emphasized his strengths, increased his work by working from home, and became very excited and energized by the surrounding environment. Also, I’m very happy because I don’t have two hours of commuting to work. Work life that is not tied to the office.

Over the course of a month in Amsterdam, Dickinson realized that the country was completely capable of remote work from other countries.

We deeply regret that our freedom of movement will soon end throughout Europe. How sad it was that we were deprived of the joy of living in the wonderful continent at our doorstep.
