While LG has become accustomed to dual-screen smartphones in recent years, the company has officially announced a bold move into the LG Wing, a recent dual-screen device for memory. Its wild-looking rotating display smartphone literally offers new possibilities for phone functionality.
The new phone was inspired by LG’s current trends in dual-screen smartphones such as the G8X ThinQ and Velvet, as well as the company’s classic swivel LG VX9400 feature phone, released over a decade ago. Wing will be the first device under LG’s new Explorer Project brand, looking for ways to bring new life to those who make smartphones.
The most interesting feature of the wing is, of course, the two OLED panels. The first is a standard 6.8-inch main screen with no bezels or notches (instead, LG chose to use a pop-up lens because the wings don’t have enough moving parts). .. However, the second 3.9-inch panel below the main display makes the Wing 2020 the most unique looking phone. Instead of collapsing two full-size (or one flexible) panels side-by-side, the Wings main display twists up and down to show a second screen, much like a Tetris T-block.
And LG has great ambitions for the types of features this new form factor enables. The idea is that in rotation mode, the main display is used for the main task and the second display acts as a supplementary window for another app or extension.
LG has great ambition in its swivel mode
For example, LG expects to use the camera control’s secondary panel while using the camera application to free up the main display as an organized viewfinder. When turned inside out, the main display can be used as a giant widescreen keyboard to respond to message threads displayed on a small vertical display. Video applications can use a second display for media and volume control. However, much of this relies on third-party developers who adopt a second display to extend their app. Otherwise, it will be a cool feature limited to LG’s own software.
Of course, you can also run two applications side by side. You can use the second display to stream online to friends and fans while playing mobile games on the main panel, or read Twitter while streaming the latest soccer games.

Wings also do not need to be used in landscape format. LG is as enthusiastic as using the main display in standard candy bar portrait mode. This is a more obvious widescreen format to navigate and work with Google Maps. You can also disable the secondary half display while flipping out using the grip lock feature. This makes it a convenient handle, for example when watching a movie.
Has a built-in gimbal mode
Wings’ unique form factor is also one of the most interesting features of the phone. This is a gimbal mode where you can use the secondary display as a grip, with joystick controls for adjusting the camera. LG actually installed a second dedicated ultra-wide camera on the back to capture footage while the main display was in rotated landscape mode (rotating the sensor to orient). It is also equipped with a new hexamotion sensor that says it helps the company avoid interference. Wing can also shoot in dual recording mode, capturing video from the front and rear cameras at the same time.
Obviously, there are so many moving parts that there are many concerns about durability and longevity. LG is aware of those concerns and has stated that it promises to support Wing. It also works on a case that is compatible with the swivel design, which takes a bit more work than a traditional phone case.
The rest of the LG Wing hardware is pretty normal. There is a Qualcomms integrated X52 modem for 5G support, 8GB of RAM, 256GB of storage, a 4,000mAh battery, an in-display fingerprint sensor, and a Snapdragon 765G processor with support for wireless charging. Of course, the biggest omission is the waterproofing you would expect from a phone with this many moving parts.
The rest of the hardware is pretty standard
The second display adds thickness and size to the phone, but not as much as the built-in full-size screen case LG used in the past. By comparison, the wings are 9.17 ounces (260 g) and 0.43 inches thick, and the Samsung Galaxy S20 Ultra has a similar sized display, weighing 7.76 ounces (220 g) and 0.35 inches thick.
The LG Wing also features a 32-megapixel pop-up front camera and a triple camera setup on the back of the device. Dedicated to the 64-megapixel main camera, 13-megapixel regular ultra-wide, and the aforementioned 12-megapixel gimbal mode ultra-wide landscape mode.
According to LG, the wing will first be released on Verizon in the United States, followed by AT & T and T-Mobile. According to LG, pricing, release dates, color options, and specifications vary by network partner, so you can see the difference between the AT & T and T-Mobile sub 6 GHz LG Wing models and the more expensive mmWave version dedicated to Verizon. Maybe, similar to the previously released LG Velvet. That said, at this time, no ambiguous release period or even price quotes for upcoming devices have been announced.
