Published

on

Xbox’s Project xCloud will officially launch on September 15th with a lineup of over 170 games. Since then, anyone with an Xbox Game Pass Ultimate subscription will have access to Xbox cloud gaming and will be able to play Xbox games on their Android smartphones or tablets. However, if you want to experience cloud gaming, you need a controller. From official pads that require mobile controller clips to third-party pads that don’t, there are many different options to consider. Thankfully, some of the best Xbox One controllers are compatible with Android devices, and there are many other great cloud gaming controller options.

Therefore, we tested and identified the best controller to use for cloud gaming on Android phones. Each of the following controllers provides a unique but great experience. It can be difficult to tell which controller is worth your time and money. If you’re looking for something similar to a console or PC game, there are plenty of pads to give you that experience. However, there are some couples who turn their Android smartphones into handhelds like the Nintendo Switch, making them easy and fun to carry.

Quick Look: The best mobile controller for Xbox Cloud Gaming

We’ll keep updating this article while we test our controllers, clips, and devices further, but in the meantime, read the current overview of the best xCloud controllers. Please note that the prices below are normal prices and do not reflect current discounts or fluctuations. Amazon tends to discount products on a regular basis, so if you’re patient, you can get these controllers for a high price.

Xbox One controller

Good things

All xCloud games are designed with this controller in mind Affordable Long battery life with two AAs

bad person

Requires controller clip

The Xbox One controller is probably Project xCloud’s most obvious choice, but you’ll need a controller clip for the best experience. All xCloud games are designed with the Xbox One controller in mind, so they work perfectly with all titles, including those that utilize analog triggers, such as racing games. The big bonus is that if you’re an Xbox Game Pass subscriber, you probably already own an Xbox One controller, so that’s fine.

Xbox One Elite Series 2 Controller

Good things

Excellent build quality Comfortable handgrip Detachable back paddle Replaceable thumbstick stick Adjustable analog stick tension Up to 40 hours battery life

bad person

Expensive replaceable parts are easy to lose

With incredible build quality, an easy-to-click home button, and excellent hand and trigger grips, the Xbox One Elite Series 2 controller feels the best of any other controller. It features two different trigger stop positions, interchangeable back paddles and parts, and adjustable analog stick tension. Perhaps my favorite aspect of the controller is the included Xbox 360 sized thumbstick. The Elite Series 2 pad also features three profiles that allow you to save backpaddle mappings, so you can easily change them on the fly when switching games.

Unfortunately, losing a replaceable thumbstick is easy and is a dangerous option to take with you on the go. Nonetheless, the Xbox Elite Series 2 controller is one of the best controllers I’ve ever used, and thanks to its compatibility with the Xbox Series X, it’s worth the purchase. You may just not want to take it with you when you commute.

Razer Raiju Mobile

Good things

Full-size controller that works comfortably in all games Adjustable phone clip with repositionable back and shoulder buttons Satisfactory tactile buttons Works on PCs Up to 23 hours of battery life

bad person

Not compatible with Xbox console

Razer’s Raiju Mobile is an elite-style controller with a phone clip built into the chassis. The clip is adjustable and holds the phone in place while the Raiju Mobile is connected via Bluetooth. This is a great all-in-one option and feels solid enough to survive a commute or road trip. The controller works well on a PC and is as fun as connecting to a mobile device.

In addition to the basics, you can customize the included back paddle and additional shoulder buttons. You can remap any function of the controller to these buttons, so you can easily put your thumb on the stick when you need to reload or perform another action. You can also activate the trigger stop to shorten the Raiju Mobile trigger throw.

Razer Junglecat

Good things

Attractive Nintendo Switch-like design Very portable Satisfactory click button Quick and easy Bluetooth connection Over 100 hours battery life

bad person

Phone case compatible only with a limited number of phones Digital trigger buttons are not suitable for some games Small size takes time to get used to Xbox body incompatible

The Razer Junglecat is the closest thing to accessing a Nintendo Switch on your Android phone. The Jungle Cat controller, like a switch joy-con, clips to the side of the phone case and then connects via Bluetooth. You can also reconnect quickly and easily after connecting to the phone for the first time.

The controller is also very similar to Joy-Cons. In particular, it resembles an analog stick displayed on a switch. The directional pad is divided into four different buttons, but the shape is similar to the DualShock. These buttons, like bumpers and triggers, have a pleasing click feel. It’s a little hard to get used to when playing Xbox One games, but unfortunately the triggers aren’t analog, but once you get used to the smaller size, it becomes an incredible portable controller option.

The Junglecat controller can be connected to any compatible device, but only comes with a case that fits a limited number of phones. Razer currently sells Junglecat cases for the Razer Phone 2, Huawei P30 Pro, Samsung Galaxy S10 +, and Galaxy Note 9.

Razer Kishi

Good things

Great-feeling analog sticks Analog triggers work well in all games USB-C connection allows low-latency play Compatible with most Android phones No charging required Equipped with a USB-C port for charging mobile phones

bad person

USB-C port doesn’t work with USB-C headphones Massy buttons make it less premium than other Razer controllers Not compatible with Xbox consoles

Razer’s latest mobile controller is similar to the Junglecat in that it transforms your phone into a Nintendo Switch-like look. However, it is compatible with more phones and makes recommendations much easier. The other two Razer mobile controllers connect via Bluetooth, while the Razer Kishi connects directly to the USB-C port on your phone. Just adjust the strap, connect your smartphone to Kishi and start playing. Kishi does not require charging and runs on your cell phone battery. Thankfully, it has its own USB-C port that allows you to charge your phone while you’re playing.

As a controller, Kishi has the same features (including analog triggers) as a regular Xbox One controller. The buttons and directional pads aren’t as pleasing to press as the Jungle Cat and feel a bit muddy, but they still work well in all games. The analog stick is a bit more accurate and comfortable because it’s more like a standard Xbox One controller than the Junglecat. All in all, the Razer Kishi isn’t as upscale as Razer’s other controllers, but it’s a great pad for xCloud gaming.

8Bitdo SN30 Pro

Good things

The SNES design is classic for some reason. Amazing analog sticks and shoulder buttons Includes up to 16 hours of battery life feature remapping and software customization feature controller clips

bad person

Not compatible with Xbox console

8Bitdo makes great pads, including our old favorite controllers. All of its Bluetooth controllers are compatible with Android phones and work on xCloud, but the retro controller company plans to release a controller specifically designed for the Xbox streaming service.

The special Xbox SN30 Pro has the same design as 8Bitdo’s standard SN30 Pro, similar to the 8ES controller. In addition to the classic SNES layout, it features triggers, analog sticks, and Xbox One menu buttons. It also comes with a controller clip that makes it easier to use this controller on your phone. If you’re a fan of the iconic shapes of SNES controllers, the 8Bitdo SN30 Pro will certainly not disappoint. The Xbox version will be released on September 21st.
