Confirmed data breach that Razer may have disclosed customer data

Razer has confirmed that there was a leak that could have exposed some customer data.

The leak is said to have been noticed around mid-August. Specifically, it is August 19th. Discovered by security researcher Bob Diachenko. The researcher found that the Razer Store had a database that wasn’t properly protected.

Diachenko then contacted Razer about the issue. Then I had a conversation with the company for several weeks. According to Diachenko, I contacted Razer shortly after the leak was discovered, but it took more than three weeks to resolve the issue.

Razer data breaches may have revealed different types of information

For large companies that handle large amounts of customer information, data breaches are never a good thing.

In the case of Razer, leaks can leak information for up to 100,000 customers. Razer states that the currently improperly configured database has been fixed and is safe.

There were various types of information that could have been published. This includes your email address, shipping address, order details about what you purchased, and your phone number.

Basically, the published data could include what you bought from Razer and where it was heading. Razer also states that Leak did not disclose information such as credit card details and passwords.

For those who have shopped on the Razer website in the past month, this should be a little reassuring. Also, it’s worth noting that just because you had an improperly protected database doesn’t mean that someone actually got that information.

There are still risks in the future

As Diachenko points out, customers who purchase products from Razer should continue to be aware of potential risks.

The data breach does not include credit card information or passwords, but it does not mean that there is no information breach that could be obtained by an attacker.

Customers should be aware of emails that claim to be from Razer. I’m also tired of emails trying to collect more information than they already exist.

Order details and shipping information may be published, so it’s easy for someone with that information to pretend to be Razer’s support and get something more useful. Like credit card information.
