Razer has released a Lightning version of the popular Kishi game controller.
Apple is taking the game seriously. It’s becoming more and more common as Apple continues to invest in the Apple Arcade and more features are offered to MFi controllers.
The Razer Kishi is very compact
Support has been brought to the official Xbox and Playstation controllers, and more MFi controllers are on the market. Of course, you can now add the Razer Kishi to the list.
The Razer Kishi controller hasn’t been used for some time, but it’s not new. However, it made its debut as a USB-C controller for Android devices. Razer is now debuting an iPhone-specific MFi-certified Lightning version.
The Kishi controller is very unique. There are typically two types of mobile game controllers. You will see a standalone controller that connects via Bluetooth. For these, you support your iPhone or iPad and play wire-free. The other is a type that holds the mobile phone on the controller. Basically, a regular gaming controller with a clip on top.
The shore is neither. Instead, Kishi aligns the iPhone snugly in the center and places controls on both sides. Make your iPhone a more modern Sony PSP.
Razer Kishi back panel
It’s a little tricky to set up first. The controller folds and is secured with two clips on the back. Pushing them towards the sides frees the back and separates the two halves of the controller.
Razer Kishi extension
Unfortunately, it only seems to fit the phone without a case. Our official Apple leather case was too thick to fit on either end of the controller. There are two sets of rubber-like inserts on both ends to grab the phone. Replace according to the model.
Kishi has all the standard controls needed for a controller. On the left side are the joystick, home button, options button, and 8-way directional pad. On the right side are the X, Y, A, B buttons, another joystick, and the menu button. Both joysticks can be pushed down. There are also 4 LEDs on this side.
There are also unique bumper and trigger buttons (L1, L2, R1, and R2) on both sides. The Lightning input is under the joystick on the right. As a result, you can connect the power supply while playing, so your mobile phone will not break down during the game.
This controller is hard-connected via Lightning, so it has less latency than Bluetooth. We’ve used a lot of bluetooth controllers and had no major issues with latency during play, but more serious gamers vow to have a wired connection wirelessly. I’ve played a lot of different Apple Arcade games and noticed that the on-screen actions differed in how quickly they responded to the controller, but is this just a placebo effect when kicking the butt with just LEGO Brawls? I didn’t know.
One of the most likely questions users will face is whether Kishi will work with the upcoming iPhone 12 product line. There is no specific answer because I don’t have the device at hand.
However, there are some iPhone 12 dummy units that are almost certain to be accurate. I’ve tried all three sizes of devices and found that they all fit fine.
Certainty is not yet guaranteed here. Apple’s MFi certification is rigorous and each phone is tested individually to ensure compatibility. Razer will probably renew its certification after the release of the iPhone 12, but until then, we have only our own anecdotal evidence that the new phone works fine.
Need to buy a Razer Kishi?
Kishi is a great game controller. It’s more compact than a standalone controller, has less delay due to direct connection, and doesn’t require its own charging or battery. It’s also MFi certified by Apple and is one of the best products you can add to your Apple Arcade.
Razer Kishi iPhone 11 Pro
The Bluetooth controllers are solid, some of which are cheaper than Kishi, but you need a compact device that you can carry around and snap into the game at any time without the need for charging.
All the buttons are tactile, the controller is comfortable in the hand and you don’t have to support the phone to use it. Not to mention Razer’s legendary history in the game space.
It’s hard-wired through Lightning, so you can’t use the controller on a Mac or Apple TV, but for mobile gamers, it’s one of the most compelling controllers to date.
Compact and portable When not in use, direct Lightning connection with less delay, no charging Pass-through Lightning connection to charge your phone during the game Solid Razer Quality Excellent Tactile Button Fits a large array of iPhone models with MFi certified Bluetooth controller Doesn’t work on a fairly expensive Apple TV or Mac
