Government Supports British Companies Working on Dangerous “Space Debris”

Seven pioneering projects to develop new sensor technologies and artificial intelligence for monitoring dangerous space debris have been announced today by the British Space Agency.

The UK Space Agency and the Department of Defense have also announced the next steps in a joint initiative to raise UK awareness of events in space.

Estimators of space debris in orbit vary from about 900,000 space debris over 1 cm to a total of over 160 million orbital objects. Currently, only a small portion of this debris can be tracked and evaded by working satellites. The UK has great opportunities to benefit from a new era of satellite megaconstellation-a vast network of hundreds or thousands of spacecraft. Therefore, it is more important than ever to track this debris effectively.

Today’s investment will help strengthen the UK’s ability to track this space junk and monitor the risk of potentially dangerous satellites and crew collisions with the International Space Station.

Projects supported today include Lift Me Off, which develops and tests machine learning algorithms to distinguish between satellite and space debris, and Fujitsu, which combines machine learning and quantum-inspired processing to improve mission plans to remove debris. It is included.

Deimos and Northern Space and Security have developed a new optical sensor to track space objects from the United Kingdom, and Northern Ireland-based Andor has expanded its astronomical camera to produce smaller sized debris. Track and map.

D-Orbit UK uses space-based sensors on its recently launched satellite platform to capture images of space objects and combine them with passive bistatic radar technology developed by the University of Strathclyde.

Finally, a new satellite laser ranging technology will be studied by Lumi Space to accurately track smaller space objects.

Last year, there was close contact that a £ 100 million spacecraft operated by the European Space Agency (ESA) had to turn on the thrusters to dodge satellites. Collisions between the spacecraft were uncertain, but the orbit poses a sufficient threat and the ESA concludes that the spacecraft need to be maneuvered in a harmless manner.

Secretary-General Alok Sharma said: Millions of space debris orbiting the globe pose a major threat to the UK satellite system, which provides the important services we all take for granted, from mobile communications to weather forecasts.

By developing new AI and sensor technologies, the seven pioneering space projects we are supporting today have significantly enhanced Britain’s ability to monitor these dangerous space objects, creating new jobs and everyday life. Helps protect the services we depend on.

Graham Turnock, Chief Executive Officer of the British Space Agency, said: You can never drive off a highway full of broken glass and debris. Still, satellites and space stations must navigate daily in orbit.

In this new era of space mega-constellation, the UK has a must-see opportunity to lead the way in monitoring and working on this space junk. This funding will help us seize this opportunity and, in doing so, will create jobs with the expertise and new advanced skills sought across the country.

Financing will occur at the same time as the signing of a partnership agreement between the Defense Ministry and the British Space Agency to help recognize the space territory. This civil-military collaboration integrates data and analysis from users of defense, civil and commercial space, and what is happening in orbit to ensure the safety and security of UK-licensed satellites. The purpose is to better understand.

Based on the UK’s current efforts, which the Royal Air Force and RAF analysts have been working on since 2016, the agreement will further enhance cognitive capabilities in the space territory.

We can also work with global allies such as the United States to provide opportunities to increase space sustainability and support ongoing efforts to maintain the UK space industry as a global leader.

The UK is already a world leader in small satellite technology, telecommunications, robotics and earth observation, and our university embraces some of the best in the world of space science. Space Surveillance and Tracking (SST) is a growing international market, with euro consultants and space consultants in London economics predicting that it could exceed £ 100m.
