Microsoft withdraws from the start of AnyVision facial recognition

Microsoft has withdrawn its minority investment in a facial recognition start-up that hit the headlines last year for allegedly monitoring Palestinians, the tech giant said on Friday. Microsoft also said it would stop any minority investment in companies selling facial recognition technologies.
A Microsoft-funded investigation by former U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder has determined that AnyVision technology does not power mass surveillance in the West Bank. Nevertheless, Microsoft has stated that it has opted out of AnyVision’s stake and would not be a minority stakeholder in other facial recognition companies because it cannot properly supervise companies in this way.
Being a minority investor in a company that sells sensitive technology generally does not offer “the level of supervision or control that Microsoft has over the use of its own technology,” the company said in a statement to Microsoft website for M12, the company’s venture capital fund.
Last year, Microsoft hired Holder to investigate if AnyVision violated Microsoft ethics. An October report from NBC News said that the facial recognition technology created by AnyVision was used in a secret military effort to monitor Palestinians in the West Bank; AnyVision rejected the report’s claim.
Friday, Microsoft Reports Holder Investigation Findings, who said that the available evidence demonstrates that “AnyVision technology has not previously and does not currently fuel a mass surveillance program in the West Bank that has been alleged in media reports”.
