Redmi 9A Review-Xiaomi’s Cheapest Smartphone
The Redmi 9A costs $ 1 under Benjamin and requires a lot of compromises to reach that price range. This is a basic minimal smartphone. It’s primarily designed to seduce people upgrading from feature phones, which are probably $ 20 cheaper than this device. Despite its low price, Xiaomi was able to check many boxes, including a large screen, a large battery, a headphone jack, and a reasonably decent camera.
Redmi 9A is available in blue, green and black
It’s an Android smartphone that works with basic calling, text, browsing and social media apps, and has a large battery that lasts for two days with moderate to light usage. Xiaomi’s MIUI 12 has some great features, and the company has a decent track record of software updates.
So what’s in the Redmi 9A box?Box, phone, 10W brick, micro USB cable
Inside the box are a phone, documents, a SIM ejector tool, a 10W charging brick, and a micro USB cable. For strange reasons, Xiaomi omitted the case inside the box. This is a surprise. Also, if the entire industry is migrating to USB-C, the decision to adopt the micro USB route seems a bit strange. Last but not least, the phone doesn’t even have a factory-installed film screen protector. It seems that some serious corners have been reduced to achieve a psychological price barrier of less than $ 100.
Let’s take a closer look at the overall design
Overall, the 9A feels a light phone, even though it’s pretty big. This shows good weight distribution. The raised texture on the back of the plastic provides ample grip. Despite the textured back, fingerprints are clearly visible. The matte finish line, which includes the camera module and branding, thrives on a slight design for an otherwise clean look.
The bezel is quite large compared to most other smartphones, but you need to remember the price here. There is a teardrop cutout for the front selfie camera. The button is on the right and needs to be a little lower for one-handed use. Tactile feedback from the buttons is accurate.
There’s a headphone jack in the upper left corner, and a micro USB port at the bottom, a speaker grill, and a notch for the microphone. Micro USB indicates that you are using an older device and are trying to attract customers who have not migrated to the latest device with a USB-C port.
The dual SIM card and SD card tray slots are located at the top of the left housing panel. Available in three colors: blue, green, and black. Xiaomi sent us a sky blue base version Redmi 9A for review. Xiaomi claims that the P2i nanocoating provides some protection against everyday water spills and splashes. This is a bonus in this price range.
Overall, it balances the form and functionality of smartphones under $ 100.
Is the display suitable for a $ 99 smartphone?It’s a big 6.5 inch display, but it’s a little faded
The Redmi 9A’s 6.5-inch HD + screen is fairly large, with a resolution of 720 x 1600 pixels and a density of 269 ppi. However, the display looks whitish even with indoor lighting. The color accuracy is also not good. Adjusting the color scheme settings will improve things too much.
MIUI and Xiaomi always have a lot of features, making them available on even the most affordable devices. So this is a cheap LCD panel, but night reading mode and dark mode are also available in the display settings menu.
In summary, if your display is important to your needs, it’s better to spend a little more money looking elsewhere.
Redmi 9A performance is good enough for basic everyday tasks
The Redmi 9A runs on a MediaTek Helio G25 octa-core processor with 2GB of RAM and 32GB of eMMC 5.1 storage. This is a TSMC 12nm FinFET Octa-Core processor with a Cortex A53 core clocked up to 2.0GHz. Since the basic storage is only 32GB, the storage capacity can be expanded via a micro SD card.
The Redmi 9A is definitely a performance downgrade compared to its older brother, the Redmi 8A, which has 3GB or 4GB of RAM and 32GB and 64GB of internal memory.
Using the phone, text, email, browsing, and YouTube, I didn’t see a big delay, but it takes a little longer to open the app. A slight delay is noticeable when you start switching apps. If you start switching games here, your phone will slow down significantly. Graphic-intensive titles like PUBG and Call of Duty will not work on this phone. However, these games can be played with lower settings in the Lite version. Note that the phone tends to get a little hot, even with the Lite version, which has a lower setting.
The base version of 2GB RAM is probably the weakest part of many smartphones under $ 100! However, if you are on the Redmi 9A market, there is a version with 3GB of RAM.
Another shortcut Xiaomi took to reduce the price to $ 99 was to omit the fingerprint sensor. The included face unlock is slow and often takes more than a second to unlock the phone. Also, face unlocking often fails, requiring you to enter a PIN or pattern. I threw it away early and used a number code to unlock the phone for this review.
MIUI12 software is packed with features MIUI12 brings many great features to this affordable smartphone
Our Redmi 9A review unit is running MIUI 12.0.5 global version on Android 10. The August 2020 Android security patch was available as soon as the phone was launched and set up. One of the great things about Xiaomi is that even budgeting includes almost all its core features. There are many customizations in the settings menu that allow you to customize your phone to your personal taste.
In addition, it includes all the features of Google’s Android 10, including digital well-being, dark mode, and the Google Assistant. With each MIUI repeat, Xiaomi tried to get rid of the overly heavy customized skins and bring the device closer to the stock Android device. Swipe left on the home screen to see the detection feed like a Pixel device. If you prefer, you can also map the Google Assistant to the power button.
There is a folder called Tools that contains many useful apps such as calculator FM radio, screen recorder and scanner. Some apps and games are pre-installed, but you can uninstall all if you want. Therefore, the total amount of bloatware is negligible. The tricky part is that the ads show up even after downloading the app from the Play Store. This is something that many users have been complaining about lately, especially on cheap Xiaomi devices.
Xiaomi has a solid track record of providing software updates, so expect your device to be supported for at least a year or two.
MIUI 12 makes your calls run smoothly without any unpleasant hiccups or intrusions. Also, if you don’t like something, you can hide it or uninstall it.
So what about battery life?Battery life is long, charging time is not so long
One corner that Xiaomi didn’t cut on this phone is the battery. With a whopping 5000mAh battery, this phone can easily hold up all day long, even with frequent use. The on-time of the screen is very good and the SoT of the phone is always 7-8 hours. For the average user, this can easily be converted to a two-day use device. The Ultra Power mode setting can further extend battery life, but it limits phone functionality to a minimum.
The idle discharge rate was very low, with only 2% battery drain seen overnight. However, this euphoria can be alleviated by the terrible charging time using the included 10W charger. It takes about 3 hours to fully charge the phone from 0%.
Really Xiaomi should support at least 18W charging on this phone considering the size of the battery. The old Redmi 8A supported 18W charging, but strangely, Xiaomi omitted it this time.
Redmi 9A audio is basic, but functionalAudio checks all the appropriate boxes and is worth the price
A single bottom-launching speaker on the right side of the phone does the job. The speaker is small but repairable, and I had no problem using it as a speakerphone for calls of 30 minutes or more. The music quality of some heavy rotation songs was basic. As far as media consumption is concerned, it is best to use headphones or earphones to improve audio quality.
The Redmi 9A includes a headphone jack, which should be set high when combined with good headphones or earphones for high quality audio output. At low volume settings, the output of wired AKG earphones sounds dull. Bluetooth pairing with my Enacfire E60 was quick and easy. The audio quality via BT was better than wired earphones.
FM radio support is in favor of target audience requirements in emerging economies. The FM radio app is in the Tools folder.
Is the camera good? The pictures are surprisingly good in good lighting conditions
The Redmi 9A has a single 13MP rear camera sensor and the LED flash is part of the camera module. The front selfie camera is a basic 5MP unit and is another downgrade from the previous Redmi 8A 8MP selfie camera.
Photos from the rear camera are decent in this price range. In sunlight, the photo shows details and the color reproduction is accurate, even if it is slightly desaturated. The main camera was able to capture the color of the sky very consistently. The dynamic range is not very large and HDR processing will take some time. Selfie in good lighting conditions is actually a bit better than I expected, given that this is a 5MP camera.
Portrait mode works with both cameras, but edge detection isn’t optimal, but it’s nice to have this feature available at this price point. If you take pictures after sunset, please note that night mode is not available. See sample photos from the Flickr gallery at the links below.
Redmi 9A Camera Sample-Flickr
You can shoot video with both front and rear cameras [email protected] The camera focuses fairly quickly in video mode. The microphone performance is good and the lighting is good. Video quality is good enough for small social media clips and video calls. There is no image stabilization, but it is expected considering the price of this smartphone.
Overall, the photo quality of both cameras is pretty good when taking pictures and videos in good lighting conditions. Quality may deteriorate in the dark or indoors.
Connectivity was actually good for non-US devices
Xiaomi provided the M2006C3LG version of Redmi 9A for this review. In T-Mobile’s Southern California area, LTE was readily available and data speeds were comparable to or slightly better than the Pixel 4 XL. VoLTE or Wi-Fi calls were not possible with T-Mobile phones.
The call quality was excellent in both handset mode and speakerphone mode. I had no problems sending texts, downloading apps, watching YouTube videos, or streaming music via T-Mobile’s Spotify station. My Enacfire E60 earphones were seamlessly paired via Bluetooth 5.0. Since this is a low cost mobile phone, Redmi 9A does not support contactless payment because it does not have an NFC module.
So is the Redmi 9A a smartphone worth $ 99?
I couldn’t believe the Redmi 9A’s retail price was $ 99 when I used this device with some other device in the last 7 days. Check many correct boxes in terms of display size, battery life, audio options, MIUI software, and camera performance (in bright places). There are some items that I think Xiaomi was a little too aggressive to cut out the corners. RAM, charging brick, fingerprint scanner, front camera.
Keep in mind that there was a base 2GB version for review. Xiaomi offers a version with 3GB of base RAM for an additional $ 10, which you should get.
Overall, this is a great entry-level smartphone for people upgrading from older foldable phones and feature phones, at least in emerging economies. For some people in these areas, even $ 99 is a lot of money. That said, I wish Xiaomi could have a film screen protector, a TPU case, an 18W USB-C charging brick, and 3GB RAM for an additional $ 15. If the phone is sent to us for review, don’t hesitate to give it a 5 star.
