Microsoft enhances Microsoft 365 tools as end of support for Office 2010 and Office for Mac 2016

Microsoft announced on Monday that it is no longer supporting Office 2010 and Office 2016 for Mac, which are “perpetual license” versions of Microsoft’s productivity suite software.

The end-of-support phase means that Microsoft does not receive software updates for these products, including security patches. Microsoft also explained that it does not guarantee that the continuingly functional Office 2010 and Office 2016 for Mac suites will be able to connect to a variety of Office 365 services in the near future.

It seems that Microsoft is currently using the descriptor “Microsoft 365 Apps” instead of Office 365 apps. In March, Microsoft announced a general product brand change for Office 365 products. Most are now called “Microsoft 365” products.

Office Perpetual License Is Not Dead Yet Perpetual License for Businesses such as Office 2010 and Office 2016 for Mac Office products, once purchased, are Microsoft’s traditional 10-year support model (Windows side) called the “Fixed Lifecycle Policy” Follow. .. These products are rather static and do not have regular monthly feature updates.

However, Microsoft really wants organizations to switch to Microsoft 365 services. The Microsoft 365 service follows a monthly subscription-based payment model where the product gets monthly feature updates. Microsoft 365 applications follow the “Latest Lifecycle Policy”. Under this policy, support is subject to software up-to-date and there is no extended long-term product lifecycle service commitment to your organization. Under the Modern Lifecycle Policy, Microsoft may force termination of a product or product feature by notifying the organization at most 30 days in advance.

A long-standing trend is that Microsoft has tended to turn organizations towards different subscription-based models, and that trend continues. At Ignite in September, Microsoft announced that the following new on-premises application servers, such as Exchange Server and SharePoint Server, will be launched in late 2021 and will only be available for subscription. However, an exception has occurred. For Office, the new perpetual licensed Office versions for Windows and Mac will continue to be available next year.

New Office 365 Management Tool Microsoft may discontinue perpetually licensed Office products in favor of “cloud” -enabled Microsoft 365 services, but some customers want static products and traditional support models I understand that you are. So far, it’s working.

Here’s how this concept was announced by Jared Spataro, Corporate Vice President of Microsoft 365:

For customers who are not ready for the cloud and especially need on-premises or hybrid deployments, such as completely disconnected or restricted environments, we offer Office 2019, a persistent version of Office that does not receive feature updates. doing. However, for everyone else, we’ve created a set of resources to help you migrate to Microsoft 365 apps, and innovations designed to help keep your environment up-to-date after the migration.

The announcement primarily included a number of tools to help organizations switch to Microsoft 365 Apps.

IT professionals also get improved help for managing Microsoft 365 subscriptions. This September Ignite session featured several new tools by Amesh Mansukhani, Principal Program Manager on the Office Engineering Team.

The following new Microsoft 365 admin tools will arrive in preview this month within the Apps admin center portal accessible to global admins.

Inventory Security Currency Reporting Service Profile Target Version (Action Center)

Microsoft recognizes that more than 41% of companies struggle to keep their monthly Office updates up-to-date, Mansukhani said at the beginning of his talk. As a result, more insights and controls have been added to the Apps admin center portal.

The new inventory feature in the Apps admin center portal shows details of the Microsoft 365 version you’re using, including products that are no longer supported. He promised that the inventory feature would allow for easy rollback or rollforward operations in Microsoft 365 product versions. The inventory feature shows the Microsoft 365 build numbers, channels, devices, and add-ins used by your organization. IT professionals can also detect 32-bit and 64-bit implementations.

A new security update status report in the Apps admin center portal allows IT professionals to check security patch compliance for Microsoft 365 app versions. You can also set a “patch Tuesday” update compliance goal for your device.

The portal also has an Action Center where you can set specific actions that IT professionals perform. These actions can be applied to individual end users or groups that use Microsoft 365 services.

The new service profile feature in the Apps admin center portal is used to display information about application updates. For example, the channels used and the devices currently being updated are displayed. It also indicates whether the device has enough disk space to receive the latest Microsoft 365 Apps feature updates.

Mansukhani says there is a “snooze” feature that you can use if you need to defer a feature update for Microsoft 365. Updates may be delayed to prevent updates at the end of the year. This is clearly a common corporate practice for software updates.

You’ll also be able to see the OneDrive deployment report in preview (excluding this month). For example, you will see a sync error.

For more information on setting up the Microsoft 365 Apps admin center portal, see Mansukhani’s blog post this Wednesday. He described the portal features currently available in preview format.
