Google’s John Mueller has provided new information about the new Mobile First Index. The big news is that desktop-only sites will be permanently removed from the index. In addition, there is a bug related to the m-dot site, and the date of switching to the mobile index has been fixed and is unlikely to change.

PubCon Pro Virtual 2020 John Mueller Discusses Google Mobile Index John Mueller confirmed that desktop-only sites will be removed from Google’s index in March 2021. The full mobile index is scheduled for March 2021.

John has announced a fixed date for March 2021 to switch to the new mobile index. He said it was a huge internal business that brought about some unfixed bugs.

Most important is his statement that desktop-only sites will be removed from the index. Not only that, images and other assets in the desktop version of the site will also be removed from Google’s index.

What Mueller said:

“… I’m currently using Googlebot on my smartphone to index the web almost completely, which is much more than what users actually see when they search.

And one thing people’s still often confused about is that, for example, if there’s something on the desktop, Google will recognize it and take mobile content into account.

However, in reality, in the future, only mobile content may be indexed.

Therefore, when a site moves to the Mobile First Index, everything that is only on the desktop site will be deleted. I basically ignore it.

… Everything you want to index must be on your mobile site.

And the final deadline we came up with is March 2021. “

M-Dot Mobile Index Bug

Of particular interest is the performance of mobile sites configured as individual m-dot individual versions. M-dot is a site hosted on another subdomain such as m.example.com.

In some cases, especially on m-dot sites that use the hreflang attribute, Google may not be able to send desktop users from the search engine results page (SERP) to the desktop version, Mueller said. In such cases, Google will send desktop users to the m-dot mobile version.

Mueller did not identify why Google struggled to redirect desktop users to the desktop version of the m-dot site. He just commented that this situation would not change immediately.

Mueller’s comment on a bug on the m-dot site:

“One of the mobile-first indexing issues can pop up, especially if you’re working on a large or older site like the m-dot setup …

When it comes to mobile-first indexing, this makes things very difficult. Therefore, although you can handle these, you may want to index only the m-dot version of your site and display the m-dot version of your site in your desktop search results.

Search results typically try to show the correct version, desktop or mobile version, at least by URL. The indexed content is … Mobile version only.

However, the m-dot site may have an m-dot version that did not actually realize that it had a connection to the desktop version. This is much more likely to happen if you have the m-dot version and are using hreflang.

The only solution is basically to make sure that the user redirects the user from the m-dot version to the desktop version when using the desktop browser.

And I don’t think we’ll change this in the near future, or perhaps at all. “

Final Point March 2021 is the final date for desktop-only sites to be permanently removed from Google’s index. On M-dot sites, desktop browser users may be sent from Google’s SERP to the mobile version of the site. If this is your case, it is recommended to detect your desktop browser and redirect to the correct desktop version. Only content that exists in the mobile version of your website will be indexed and ranked. Content that the mobile version of the site wants to accurately rank on Google. Desktop content is completely ignored.Quote
