Ongoing OnePlus 8T Review: Return to Victory Official

The OnePlus 8T didn’t arrive any longer. When OnePlus launched the OnePlus 8 and 8 Pro earlier this year, they were the most expensive phones to date, in the midst of economic uncertainty and a slump in premium smartphones boosted by a pandemic. .. In short, people needed the Samsung Galaxy A71, but now they have the Samsung Galaxy S20 Ultra.

With 8T, OnePlus has returned to its roots. For $ 750 from the OnePlus Remove non-product link, it’s not only $ 50 cheaper than the comparable OnePlus 8 but also brings the high-end features and innovations fans expect. You haven’t got wireless charging yet. This is a nearly running gag for OnePlus at the moment, but it’s getting a tremendous 65W warp charge out of the box.

While you’re missing out on a few other professional features such as the curved quad HD display and the new Snapdragon 865+ processor, the OnePlus 8T doesn’t feel inferior to a phone over $ 1,200. Stacked with the $ 700 Galaxy S20FE and the $ 799 iPhone 12, the OnePlus 8T is once again a true rival.

Editor’s Note: The OnePlus 8T is still under test and we will update this review accordingly.

This story is part of a continuous summary of the best Android phones. Learn more about competing products and how to test them.

Beautiful design all around

Like all other phones in 2020, the OnePlus 8T will not reinvent the wheel. It features a 6.55-inch display with a hole-punch camera and rounded corners, and a glossy, non-slip glass back. It fits comfortably in my hand and pocket and will be a sweet spot for most people looking for a big screen phone.

The OnePlus 8T maintains a good alert slider.

OnePlus sent me an aquamarine green colorway, and I was struck immediately. Like a chameleon, the lighting changes green and blue, and the matching sides accentuate the contrast with the display. The camera array on the back is derived from the flagship Galaxy phone, so it loses some of OnePlus’s uniqueness, especially compared to the 7T circular array, but the 8T is one of the ones that OnePlus has ever manufactured. Definitely ranked as one of the best phones in.

Kindness also continues to the front. At first glance, the 8T looks the same as the 8 and 8 Pro overall, with a left-aligned perforated camera and a slim bezel, but closer examination reveals that the bezel is balanced. On a small note, OnePluss uses bendable chip-on-panel OLEDs that allow the top and bottom bezels to be symmetrical, making a subtle but meaningful difference.

Not as uniform as the iPhone 11, but very close, an engineering feat that brings great things to the OnePlus 9. The OnePlus8T is one of the few Android phones that feels like it was designed inside and outside. The purpose, rather than being assembled using the parts that somehow had to fit.

Michael Symon / IDG

The bezel around the OnePlus 8T is more uniform than ever.

One of the things you can’t get with the OnePlus 8T is its IP-rated water resistance, but that shouldn’t be discouraged. OnePlus does not guarantee 8T water resistance, but we have repeatedly treated the problem with winks and nudges until the OnePlus 7 is submerged in a bucket of water. So my guess is that the 8T will withstand a splash and a short dunk share.

Fewer pixels and faster speed

Inside these bezels is OnePluss’ best-ever display. It’s not as dense as the OnePlus 8 Pros Quad HD + screen, but richer, brighter, and faster than the 8 screen. Compared to one of the best displays I’ve ever seen, the Galaxy Note 20 Ultra, the OnePlus 8T is more than holding itself, even with far fewer pixels.

Michael Symon / IDG

The OnePlus 8T bezels don’t exactly match, but they’re very close together.

The 8Ts Full HD 1080 display doesn’t just look good. OnePlus has increased the refresh rate to 120Hz (from 90Hz for 8), and the difference is obvious. The scrolling is very smooth and the animations fly around. It gives the phone a real high-end feel. It’s a big compromise for high resolution displays, especially considering that Samsung forces users to lower the resolution when switching to a refresh rate of 120Hz. When I went back to 60Hz for battery testing purposes, it was so nice that I felt like I was scrolling through thick mud.

There are other smart compromises. The “T” model usually chooses the best processor possible, but the 8T uses the Snapdragon 865 chip instead of the new 865+ chip. This allows you to keep costs down without giving up too much speed. However, OnePlus compensates for the slowdown by combining the chip with UFS 3.1 storage and 12GB of RAM, which makes the app launch and load very fast. And of course, 8T supports 5G (but only on T-Mobile networks). Compared to a similarly priced Pixel 5, the OnePlus 8T is an absolute screamer and doesn’t feel slower than the $ 1,300 Galaxy Note 20 Ultra.

Equally striking is the battery life of the OnePlus 8Ts, despite the relatively average capacity of 4,500mAh (technically a twin 2,250mAh battery). Benchmarks recorded a whopping 11 hours and 37 minutes with the 120Hz display on and even longer with the 120Hz display off (although the app crashed before getting the recorded time). It’s a lot longer than the other phones I’ve tested with larger batteries. There should be no problem keeping the 120Hz option on all the time.

Michael Symon / IDG

Charge your OnePlus 8T with the new 65W USB-C charger for incredible speeds.

Helping the problem is that the OnePlus 8T also charges much faster. Usually I knock on the phone in late 2020 due to the lack of wireless charging, which is definitely a disadvantage for the 8T, but 65W warp charging is just astounding. According to my tests, an almost empty phone fills up in less than 30 minutes, not only keeps the charging speed at 55 watts, but everything you need is in the box. Unlike Samsung, which sells ultra-fast chargers for $ 50, OnePlus offers a USB-C charging cable and 65W adapter for all 8T boxes. In addition, it can be used as a 45W charger for other devices, including laptops. The OnePlus 8T represents the long-awaited breakthrough in charging from Apple and Samsung.

Finally a constantly lit display

With its long battery life and fast charging, OnePlus can finally add features that have been postponed to the 8T for a long time: a always-on display. Earlier OnePlus phones had an ambient display that was activated when you lifted or tapped it, but the 8T, like almost every other Android phone, has a real, always-on display.

Michael Symon / IDG

You finally got a always-on display with the OnePlus 8T.

And that’s a good one. OnePlus has marked things with three unique customization options. I tried Insight, which was designed in collaboration with New School. It provides excellent visualization of digital well-being statistics, including unlocking and overall use. It’s a great addition to the old standards. We look forward to testing Canvas (creating line art for photos) and Bitmoji AOD as they arrive in future software updates.

The always-on display is part of a general improvement in OxygenOS and has been tuned enough to establish its own identity without being too angry with the minimal experience. It’s significantly different from the Android 10-based version, but most changes are better. Android purists lament further deviations from Google’s vision, but the continued improvement of OxygenOS by OnePluss is impressive.

Cameras getting better and better

OnePluss phones always have a great camera, but from what we’ve seen, the 8T is on the border. In terms of hardware, you’ll get four lenses that rival what you’ll get with a Samsung Ultra phone or Apple iPhone Pro.

Camera 1: 48MP, f / 1.7, OIS Camera 2: 16MP Ultra Wide, f / 2.2, 123 degree FOV Camera 3: 5MP Macro, Focus Length 3cm Camera 4: 2MP Monochrome

You’ll notice that the telephoto lens is clearly missing, but to be honest, it wasn’t a powerful suit for OnePluss. What you can do with a digital filter I’m still not sure if you really need a dedicated lens, but at least this shouldn’t be visible through people’s clothing.

Michael Symon / IDG

The OnePlus 8T’s new Might mode allows you to take really impressive low-light photos compared to when it’s off (right).

In my first test, the OnePlus 8T really shines in night mode. The previous version was a bit uneven and decently bright, but the details were blown away and the white balance was unstable, but the 8T really does it right. It’s not yet perfect in the iPhone and Pixels leagues, but it’s more than holding itself against the latest Galaxy phones. A remarkable leap forward in OnePlus computational photography and a precursor to the next generation of OnePlus phones.

Need to buy a OnePlus 8T?

I’m still testing the OnePlus 8T and will update this review when Im is done, but the results so far have left a strong impression. For $ 749, you’ll get the specs, design, and performance of the $ 1,000 flagship. It even withstands the $ 799 iPhone 12, at least on paper.

Michael Symon / IDG

The OnePlus 8T has some new camera hardware and sophisticated processing.

So if you’re off with the prospect of paying four digits for your phone, but still need the best specs, a great Android experience, and a great design, the OnePlus 8T is a great option for $ 750. For example, for just $ 50 more than the Galaxy S20 FE, you’ll get ridiculously fast charging, double RAM, Android 11, and much more.

But OnePlus doesn’t just sell the top midrange competitors. As you can see from the thinly veiled catchphrase “Ultra does not stop anything”, we would like to adopt a high-end mobile phone. OnePlus has returned to the most successful method with a very powerful, well, very clean phone.
