Wednesday 2:00 pm Eastern Standard Time: Deleting 9,000 hours of email from your overloaded Gmail account. Eyeballs leak from the head and collect in a sticky puddle on the mouse pad of a laptop.

Or, anyway, it feels like it.

Over the last few weeks, Google has repeatedly sent warnings that we are approaching Google Drive’s storage limits. I rarely thought that Google would limit my storage capacity. The possibilities for data collection are endless and will not be neutralized or overloaded. Still, my email account I’ve had since 2014 is finally tired of keeping the endless stream of my newsletter and press releases. The 15GB that Google allocates to free users is almost full.

I wanted to write this story with a title along with one simple trick to wipe out Google Drive storage. Ideally, you should delete all the last emails in your inbox and start over, including chain letters from your cousins, newsletters from companies that bought sweaters once, and early love letters today. Various communications are stored. The relationship that the nuke-and-run method is not recommended or impossible except for those who lack any emotions.

For everyone else, there is no one trick to clear Google Suite. There are strategies described below, but unfortunately the best way I’ve found is to keep things organized as you work. And that means deleting all the emails you don’t need when you receive them, so you don’t get caught up in the mess I’ve spent cleaning in the last few days.

Over the past few days, I’ve tried different ways to delete my emails and documents. It was a painful experience. Elaborating on difficult situations and reading old emails that have nurtured bitter memories is not the way I prefer to spend work (or vacation), it’s easy to understand what can justify deleting It wasn’t (former boss on a mediocre topic) and what to leave (contract, old email from a friend). My long-standing resistance to removing these emails for years because of nostalgia and concerns that they might be needed someday falls into a bucket of what researchers consider to be digital hoarding.

The digital hoarding I wrote earlier may sound a bit hyperbolic after all. It’s not like someone who obsessively drives Steam sales literally has to go through a pile of games on the way to the bathroom. However, research shows that digital hoarding can be stressful and even annoying to those who experience it. In 2018, researchers interviewed 45 of these so-called digital hoarding people and found that the impression that the digital space is infinite contributes significantly to people’s hoarding tendency. They were surprised at the amount of digital content they had accumulated, but still struggled to remove much of it.

Many people simply didn’t care about the pile of documents, emails, photos, and music. One of the 30-year-old participants can’t bother to experience everything. I said there are too many. According to another 25 year old, I’ve left it for a long time, so I can’t bother to go back and sort.

For many participants, the prospect of removing their digital crap through it was anxious and stressful. This is certainly in line with my own experience. When I first faced the turmoil of Google Drive on the day I took on this task, I panicked and was overwhelmed by the size of the task at hand.

As with the horror before sitting down and scraping the baseboard with a pile of sponges, I was resistant and angry before I started cleaning Google Suite. But once I started, I couldn’t stop. It was very satisfying to see that a small percentage drop while reading the email, like creating a vacuum cleaner line on the carpet. So yes, there is no real trick to this, and my guess is this is intentional: if you have a hard time organizing and deleting your emails and files, your only option is a) new Get an email address (I’ve legally considered this) or b) Pay Google for additional storage. It starts at $ 1.99 / month for 100GB and goes up to $ 10 / month for 2 terabytes. Also, the more email you hold and store, the more delicious and juicy data Google can collect.

The first thing you need to do is identify where you’re storing most of the precious 15GB Google-allocated junk.To do this, go to One.Google.com and in the left sidebar[ストレージ]Click. Here you can see the breakdown of the space occupied by Google Drive, Gmail, and Google Photos.

Unless you’re a photographer or a big fan of huge PDFs and heavy spreadsheets, most of the action is probably happening in your email. The best way to take a quick look at the depressing message five years ago and remove a large number of emails without regret or sadness is to temporarily sign up for Mailstrom.co.

Mailstrom analyzes your email and, in theory, gives you the option of unsubscribing and unsubscribing quickly and easily. (For those who are concerned about privacy, Mailstrom says it will not share or sell data for advertising purposes and will delete the data 3 months after canceling the account.) However, through Mailstrom 2,500 After deleting your email, you will need to pay $ 9 to $ 30 per month to end your free trial and continue using the service. If I’m going to pay, Id will probably just buy Google Storage cheaper than a streamlined way for removal. Instead, we recommend using Mailstrom to view the most trashy senders.

I’m the second worst criminal!

Once you’ve identified the worst sender violators, you can go to Gmail, search for sciencedirect @ notification.elsevier.com (or someone sending a lot of email), and remove them in large numbers. After checking the search results, it’s on the left side of your inbox[すべて選択]Click in the box and then click Select all conversations that match this search, as shown below.

That way, you can delete all messages sent by that particular sender, not just the latest 50.

This will get rid of pretty decent email clutter in a minimum amount of time, but if you want to continue, we recommend a few more action courses.

Delete all promotional and social folders. Just make those folders the core. Check the last few pages to make sure there aren’t any important ones, then select and delete everything. It could be thousands of remaining marketing and newsletter stragglers who didn’t catch when using the Mailstrom method. If you want to remove only promotions or social emails older than a specific date, use the following search terms: : Promotions, older_than: 2y. (The space between the promotion and the comma intentionally doesn’t work.) I did this first and then decided that I didn’t need that junk for anything. goodbye! You can do the same with the category: updates, older_than: 2y newsletter. Search for all emails larger than the specified size, then delete them manually (or make them bold and select Delete All). Enter larger: 10mb for this option. This can take some time, so we recommend this only if you have already deleted your marketing emails and you still have enough free space. It makes more sense to clean up and delete emails that are larger than a certain size than attachments that are larger than a certain size. The size because many emails are huge without the help of adding attachments. However, if you want to focus on attachments, enter “has: attachmentslarger: 10MB (or any size)” in the search bar to make it wild.

Here you can find more useful Gmail search terms, but the above are the terms I’ve found to be the most effective for deleting large numbers of emails at once.

Google considers the Recycle Bin to be part of the 15GB allocated, so you need to empty the Recycle Bin before you know how much you could actually delete. If you empty the trash, those emails will disappear forever, but after 3 hours you’ll notice that your eyes turn red and you’re very bored, so it’s a good idea to click to see what’s there. I will not. Press Remove and admire the clean skirting boards / organized closets / sparkling tiles, or the most satisfying analogy of household cleaning.

Hopefully, you’ll be able to start accumulating email again for the next few years without worrying about running out of space. Here’s where I’m standing now:

It took me a few days to get here, but I took the time to try all the possible ways to get the readers the ones I found most effective. Still, you probably need to put at least an hour or two of work into this, sorry.

But if you’re going to follow two very simple rules, you don’t have to do this again.

Mark all press releases, marketing emails, etc. that you don’t want to see as spam. If you want to be kind, you can send an email to your marketing company or PR representative and politely ask them to remove it from the mailing list, but if you’re lazy or just receive too many to do this. Please send spam. Gmail will automatically clear your spam folder after 30 days, so it will disappear after a month. Do this consistently as soon as you see it. Delete other emails you don’t care about immediately. Do not leave it as it may be read later. Do not let it collect dust. Delete. Ruthlessly and seriously. With regard to messages from the alumni association and rescue teams with dogs, there is no time to abandon their indecisive and sentimental nature as they do today. goodbye!

This will require you to stay ahead of the game with minimal effort, at least for the next few years. Once you clear Gmail, you don’t have to complicate folders, labels, etc. Too many folders and labels can be a hassle. (I have only two. One is for random thoughts I send to myself late at night about my novel, and the other is a book spokesperson because I often reply in bulk at a later date. For press releases from).

By making the spam and delete buttons your best friends, you can avoid disasters that have caused you for a very long time.
