Google Donates $ 6.5 Million To Combat Coronavirus Misinformation And Fund Fact Checkers Worldwide
Google is expanding its support efforts for coronaviruses by helping to fight disinformation with $ 6.5 million pledged to fact checkers and non-profit organizations. The Google News Initiative will also support other regional fact checkers such as Full Face, Maldita.es, LatamChequa, Poltifiact and Kaiser Health News as they tackle disinformation about coronaviruses in their respective geographic regions.
To empower primary data sources and make them accessible to journalists who write data-driven articles, Google will provide additional funding to various organizations. Beneficiaries range from SciLine, based at the American Association for the Advancement of Science, to the Australian Science Media Center, creators of Scimex.org, to the JSK Journalism Fellowships at Stanford University and to the Big Local News group from Stanford.
Finally, Google will help train 1,000 journalists across India and Nigeria to spot erroneous health information as they attempt to answer frequently asked questions.
