New Google Workspace icon for Android and web

Google Workspace was announced in early October as a rebranding of G Suite and a renewed approach to officeless productivity. As part of these changes, all Google Workspace apps have a new icon and a rollout is in progress.

Google Docs, Spreadsheets, Slides

Google Docs, sheets, slides, and site and form icons haven’t changed much. However, the earmarks in the upper right corner are now darker. Internally, Google simplifies it in a variety of ways, including reducing one line of text / line and thinning glyphs.

Update 10/26: On Android, there is a big change that the entire page shape is placed on a white background. The app used to use the full-width launcher icon. So far, Google Docs and Sheets has adopted a new design in version 1.20.422.01, with slides coming in a few days later.

Google Meet

The Meet icon is very similar to Gmail and Drive in that it is made up of four Google colors. Green here is the predominant shade — with another nod to communication and classic Hangouts, there is only a little red.

10/19: Google Meet will also be available today on Android version 2020.10.04.337166131. The previous icon was notable for its creases.

Google chat

Chat is getting a new flat logo, but it’s completely green in honor of Hangouts. The inner “@” symbol has been removed, but the circular message icon is now rectangular and intersects the rectangle.

10/19: Google Chat will be next in version 2020.10.04.336992968 for Android. It hasn’t been widely deployed yet and has a large status bar icon that is easier to see.

Gmail

Similar to maps and photos earlier this year, Gmail uses four Google colors, blue, red, yellow, and green, to form an M icon. Red still has the largest share, but it brings it as Google moves away from the accent color of that app.

All past Gmail icons have a distinct envelope. Google uses the whitespace above and below the central caret / chevron to form the envelope, which is currently only implied. Anyway, it’s clever in that all the latest smartphone icons are placed on a white background.

10/16: Gmail version 2020.10.04.337159408 for Android is starting to be released today with a new icon. It doesn’t appear anywhere else in the app other than the home screen. This has always been the case given the lack of a splash screen. That said, the status bar icon is now an outline of the Gmail logo.

The revamped branding has permeated some users’ web clients, but it’s not yet widely known.

Google drive

The drive is relatively unchanged, but the triangular edges are slightly rounded. There is also a very subtle red splash after the icon used to have only three colors. It’s the smallest change, but it will eventually be one of the most fun.

10/14: Google Drive is the first app to see new workspace icons available to end users. On Android, the list hasn’t been updated yet, but it’s been deployed in version 2.20.401.06.40 via the Play Store. The new icon will appear on the home screen icon and splash screen.

In another change, Google updates the icon that appears in the Android status bar. The material theme has been processed and the outline has been hollowed out.

The new drive icon will also appear in the web app. This is a simple replacement for the upper left corner and the favicon. The web app launcher icon is also an old variant.
