Huawei signs agreement with OSLabs to bypass the challenge of Google's App Store
"The decision is to take up the challenge of the Google application store in India. This will help Huawei to boost sales of its devices, the Huawei and Honor brands in India," said a person familiar with the matter.
Huawei is building alternatives to Google's suite of services called Google Mobile Services (GMS) because there is uncertainty about the use of GMS on Chinese company's phones following restrictions announced by the US government earlier this year. GMS includes Gmail, You-Tube, Navigation, Google Drive and Maps.
Another informed person said that while the pact was initially aimed at the Indian market, the two companies have been considering a global partnership since Huawei faced the GMS challenge around the world.
This decision is also among the first major strategic initiatives of Liyiz Hong, recently appointed head of Indian operations for Huawei's Consumer Business Group. Huawei did not respond to ET requests for comment.
The IndusOS App Store, App Bazaar, has more than 400,000 regional apps in 12 local languages in addition to English – in its own app store.
