A new version of Google Pay, supporting both iOS and Android, is currently being rolled out in the United States. The updated app includes a whole new design and lots of new features. A major overhaul has made Google Pay a robust money-handling app from a basic tap-to-pay system.
Three new tabs to meet the needs of all organizations
First, the app was split into three tabs. Each section handles various aspects of payment, from which the card is connected to the search for discounts. We hope that this change will help you organize different aspects of your Google Pay app so you can easily find what you need and ignore features you aren’t using.
[支払い]Tab handles all financial transactions Google
The tab on the far left is “Payment”. This allows you to view your transaction history and includes a peer-to-peer way to send money to friends and family. The redesign focuses on displaying more information that interests you. It’s very similar to Venmo and other similar services.
The list of contacts is displayed first. Tap any of them to open a conversation-like view showing all past payments made between you and your contacts. You also have the option to set up group payments. This allows participants to create groups where they can send and receive money to each other. This is great for people who split invoices at restaurants, for example, or share a living space.
Below is a similar layout, but for business. Whether you used Tap-to-Pay or made a payment in your browser, you’ll see a list of past transactions here. If Google Pay is available, your loyalty and reward cards will appear in the conversation. Also, if desired, retailers can optionally view offers and discounts in the same view.
This tab also displays a dedicated list of nearby locations where Google Pay is available. This includes restaurants where you can both order and pay for food. You can also pay directly from your mobile phone at a supported car park or gas station. This means that you can pay for the gas without having to operate the normally slow screen with the pump.
[探索]Search for discounts and deals on tabs Google
In the central tab “Exploration”, you can browse deals and discounts. This is brand new and by default you will see general offers. However, if you prefer, you can opt in and allow Google to analyze your transaction history. This will allow you to view more personalized offers.
In addition to deals and discounts, you’ll also see cashback offers. The refunded money will be sent directly to your Google Pay account. To move from the service, you need to link your bank account.
Google has made things simple and easy. All you need to do is tap Activate to accept the offer and select the credit card to use. Doing this makes everything else seamless. You don’t have to enter a promotion code or wait for an offer to be emailed. It works.
Finally, at the top of this tab is the QR code and barcode scanner. This allows you to scan your product in stores and find the best deals for that product in Google Shopping Search. You can also scan someone else’s barcode to send money without having to exchange phone numbers or email addresses.
Insights tab tells you where you’re wasting your money Google
The rightmost tab, Insight, allows you to link your bank or credit card. This tab is similar to apps like Mint, so you can easily see your financial status. If you allow it, Insights can crawl your Gmail inbox and Google Photos for receipts and integrate them into the Google Pay app.
Of course, Google is bending the muscles of machine learning here. You can use all the information you collect to perform your search in natural language. For example, you can search for “Mexican restaurant” or “shirt” to get results that you wouldn’t find in a regular banking app. If you’re having trouble finding what you’re looking for, you can also search for multiple terms at once.
Insights works with most standard checking and savings accounts, as well as debit and credit cards.
Googleplex is your new bank google
Google will also partner with a small number of banks in 2021 to fully integrate online checking and savings accounts with Google Pay. The new service is called Google’s “Plex”.
Just as Apple’s Apple Card uses Goldman Sachs as a bank and the iPhone’s Wallet app as a front end, Google’s new check and savings accounts use partner banks and manage their accounts using the Google Pay app. To do.
The company has partnerships with 11 banks and credit unions, and you can choose which one to use. The leak (via 9to5Google) seems to include several partners such as Citi, Stanford Federal Credit Union, SEFCU, BMO and BBVA. According to Google, there are no monthly fees, overdraft fees, or minimum balances.
A new “Goal” feature allows customers to set up repetitive tasks, such as moving money from one account to another, and provide basic money management tools.
Google Privacy Concerns
Of course, all these new features raise some privacy concerns. Google (via The Verge) states that it will not share or sell data, including transaction history, to third parties for advertising purposes. However, all data is encrypted and stored on the company’s servers so that you can search the history if needed.
If you need a personalized offer, new[探索]You need to share your data with Google in the tabs. This feature is opt-in, but it acts as a “three-month trial”. At the end of the trial period, you will be asked if you want to continue sharing your data or opt out completely.
All new features are opt-in, so in theory you can disable a bit you don’t like if you like the behavior of your previous app, or if you don’t want Google to track you more than you need.
The company has stepped into digital wallets and funding games over the last few years, which is the first sign that Google is ready to compete. Updated versions of Google Pay have become serious competitors to services such as Apple Pay, PayPal, and Samsung Pay.
