Find fake news and scams with simple Google tricks

Use Google Image Search’s reverse search to see if the images in the meme are actually from another event.

Brett Pearce / CNET

Memes, which spread online this week, claim that vendors sold Nazi and Confederate flags at the Million MAGA March, where Trump supporters gathered in Washington, DC on Saturday. But that is not true. The vendor was actually found at a Pennsylvania flea market in September, and market organizers reportedly told him to clear the flag.

Such memes, usually characterized by the political messages that make up a compelling image, are often misleading or completely wrong. Pictures of another event are usually paired with a description of something that didn’t happen or lacked context.

Fortunately, there are tricks that can help you see if this is happening and find the original source of the image. This is called searching using images. It’s easy, and it may make you feel like a great detective.

It’s not just fake news. You can also detect scams on dating and real estate sites by searching using images. This helps you find catfishers who use photos of others to pretend to be false and lure you into a relationship (they may end up asking for money or gifts, but weird pranks (Sometimes). You can also prevent personal information from being passed on to fraudsters who pretend to rent out real estate they don’t own.

How to search using images

Million MAGA March Meem was revealed by Snopes. However, not all websites that confirm the facts of news articles, rumors, and memes that fly around the Internet are accessible. If you search the story in Snopes and can’t find it, it’s time to open Google.

There are several options for searching using images. First, open Google Image Search in your Safari, Firefox, or Chrome web browser.

Option 1: Click and hold the image. Then drag it into the Google Image Search field in another window.

Option 2: Take a screenshot of the image and drag the file into the search field. (If you want, you can also upload the file from the Google Image Search bar.)

Option 3: Right click on the image and[別のウィンドウで画像を開く]Choose. Copy the URL and paste it into the Google Image Search field.

Option 4: If you are using Chrome, right click on the image and[Googleで画像を検索]Choose.

The result shows the other context in which the photo was displayed. This will help you find multiple posts trying to sell the same object (this pig chair isn’t for sale, but it’s recurring on Craigslist). It also helps you find duplicate real estate lists that the same person may not have posted.

How to search using images on mobile

For the fastest and most readable results, you should use your desktop web browser to search using images. Doing the same search on mobile is not easy. These are the easiest approaches you can try:

Option 1: In mobile Chrome browser, hold down the image[Googleでこの画像を検索]You can select.

Option 2: Hold down the photo in your mobile browser and select the option that allows you to copy the photo (for example, Copy or Copy URL). This will put the photo URL on the clipboard. Then paste the URL into the Google image search bar.

You can also use the Google app, which allows you to upload images or take pictures. However, when CNET tried to find the source of the photo, it found that the results were extremely uneven.

What to do about fake or misleading posts

You can report misleading or false memes to the social media platforms you find. You can also report fraudulent date profiles, fake advertisements, and fake rental properties to the websites on which they are hosted. The procedure for reporting a post varies from website to website.

You can also let people know that you have posted a misleading meme. Of course, the results will be different. Nevertheless, you now know how to uncover fake news at Thanksgiving dinner. It’s up to you how to handle your power.
