Microsoft Starts Testing Windows Feature Experience Pack Updates Using Windows Insider

On November 30, Microsoft released the first test build of the Windows Feature Experience Pack to Insider testers. Pack version 120.2212.1070.0 is available for beta channel testers.

To date, Microsoft executives have refused to talk about what the Windows Feature Experience Pack is. Earlier this year, we reported that the Feature Experience Pack is a collection of features that can be updated independently of the Windows 10 operating system itself. Microsoft’s goal is to make the Windows Feature Experience Pack a way to provide customers with new feature improvements other than major Windows 10 feature updates.

“We want to expand the scope and frequency of (Feature Pack) releases in the future by testing this process first with Windows Insider,” Microsoft’s Brandon LeBlanc wrote in a blog.

Microsoft’s goal is to make Windows Feature Experience Pack updates available to insiders (eventually mainstream customers) through Windows Update, as well as builds and cumulative updates.

Today’s Windows Feature Experience Pack release includes several new improvements to the snipping experience and touch keyboard. Testers can use the built-in screen snipping experience (WIN + SHIFT + S) to create screen snips and paste them directly into a folder in File Explorer. The tester will also be able to use split keyboard mode in portrait orientation on 2-in-1 touch devices.

To test today’s feature pack release, you need to install 20H2 build 19042.662 on the beta channel insider. Microsoft released Windows 10 20H2 to mainstream users in October and is testing cumulative updates to those released through the Insider program in the last few weeks.

Microsoft officials have not yet discussed when Windows 1021 H1 will be released. Based on various leaks, the Windows 10 21H2 release (codenamed “Cobalt”) is expected to be a fairly major update when released later next year.
