The SoC A12Z in the new iPad Pro is identical to the A12X, just with an additional GPU core activated
Why is it important: You expect the iPad Pros 2020 to come with a brand new Apple SoC, but the latest generation of tablets has an A12Z chip which is the same as the A12X processor found in the iPad Pros 2018, only with an additional GPU core activated.
Apple has unveiled the revamped iPad Pro alongside a MacBook Air updated last month. Rather than presenting an improved version of the SoC A13 found in the iPhone 11 and iPhone 11 Pro, the slates are equipped with the A12Z. Offering a very small increase in performance compared to their predecessors, it was suspected that the chip was a rebinned A12X, and now this has been confirmed.
TechInsights has analyzed the two chips and found that they are practically identical. Apple said one of the benefits of the A12Z was the addition of an eighth GPU core, as opposed to the seven A12Xs, but it was discovered that the latter SoC actually came with eight cores, although the ‘one of them has been deactivated.

It is unclear why Apple has disabled any of the eight A12X GPU cores, although this is common practice. It could have been linked to performance levels, which may now have improved, but it was still a surprise to see the company opting for what is essentially the same chip in the new iPad Pros. Some reports say Apple did not want to develop a new A13X processor for the latest iPads, and that another tablet revision will arrive this fall with an A14X SoC, which would be bad news for those who just bought the refresh of the iPad Pro 2020.
