Zombies are back on modern consoles and PCs

Stubbs is back from death with the news that the 2005 game Stubbs The Zombie In Rebel Without A Pulse will be re-released in 2021. The game was confirmed on PS4 after it was first announced on Switchon Nintendo’s latest Direct. For PC via PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X / S, and Steam.

Stub the zombies released for the original Xbox and PC in 2005. It features a quirky take in the zombie genre that sees the player masterminding the zombie apocalypse at the head of the zombie horde. The original game was generally well received, with a score of 7.8 / 10 in the original GameSpot review, stating: “Eating the brains of living people to form a large army of undead is very satisfying, often cheerful, and unfortunately almost painfully short.” The game wasn’t a big hit. That’s why Stubbs is probably only getting re-releases, not full remasters or remakes.

Expectations for a re-release are low on the Xbox announcement page, with an introduction from Stubbs’ point of view: “Yes, baby. 2005. I already had it pretty good, so I have it.”

Read the PS4 announcement in the same tone and announce Stubbs The Zombie as “a port no one wants”. This is despite the first appearance of Stubbs on the PlayStation console.

The original game was a debut game from Wideload Games, a studio that closed in 2014 after being acquired by Disney. The publisher Aspyr still exists and is responsible for the re-release.

Stubbs The Zombie In Rebel Without A Pulse will be re-released via Steam on March 16th for Nintendo Switch, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X / S and PC.
