An internal survey of Google employees reveals reduced happiness and new perks

Google conducts an annual employee survey called the “Google geosist,” which investigates employee opinions on topics such as leadership, compensation, and diversity. This year, a pandemic moved Google employees to remote locations, significantly reducing their health. In response, the company announced a small number of new employee benefits on Thursday. See Insider’s Business section for more information.

Google employees say their health has deteriorated significantly over the past year, according to internal research sent to employees this week and obtained by Insider.

Every year, Google asks employees to survey their employees in a survey called Googlegeist to evaluate topics such as leadership, compensation, diversity and inclusiveness.

This year’s findings reflect a difficult year for the company, which has more than 135,000 full-time employees and nearly the same number of temporary and contract workers. According to an internal note obtained by Insider, CEO Sundar Pichai announced new perks and employee changes on Thursday due to poor staff well-being.

The search engine giant moved its employees to remote locations in March of last year, when the COVID-19 pandemic began, and now plans to keep them working from home until at least September of this year.

Among the notable results from Googlegeist, the happiness question score is lower than last year. Only 57% of employees asked if they could leave their jobs outside of working hours answered positively, down 9 points from the previous year. Twenty-four percent of Google employees disagreed with the statement and said 19 percent were neutral.

When asked if they were able to complete their work and stay happy, 62% said they were positive, 22% were neutral, and 16% were unfavorable. It also showed a 9 point drop from last year’s results.

The Googlegeist survey was distributed to employees earlier this year and responses were collected over the weeks of January and February. Last year’s findings reflect data obtained in January and February 2020.

Please note that these are company-wide numbers. Employees also get data that is specific to their product area. This usually far reflects how you feel about your work.

However, according to an employee who attended and requested anonymity because he did not have the authority to speak to the media, some of these questions were so small that the leaders answered during the full attendance held on Thursday. there was.

CEO Sundar Pichai also featured the results in a follow-up note obtained by Insider on Thursday.

“One of the areas where Google geist saw the biggest decline this year was happiness,” he writes. “There are many factors behind this decline, including pandemics and the tremendous growth of the company.”

In response, Google responded with a series of company-wide vacations on March 26, a $ 500 “well-being” cash bonus, and an additional “wellness” day for every four days of vacation Google employees. Announcing additional wellness benefits.

A Google spokesperson confirmed the benefits to insiders but did not comment on the survey.

Keeping employees happy has been a thorny issue for Google since it became remote. In the company’s recent annual 10-K report, Pichai warned that a pandemic could hamper corporate culture, as CNBC reported last month.

Not only did the company face a pandemic, but workers’ problems and increased antitrust oversight have rocked boats over the past 12 months.

In February, Google fired AI ethics leader Margaret Mitchell. It was a few weeks after pushing out another ethical leader, Tim Knit Gebble. Mr Gebble said he was fired while Google was claiming to resign. This is a dispute that has caused employee backlash against leadership.

In January, more than 200 Alphabet employees announced that they would form a trade union, which has since grown to more than 800 members.

The company plans to bring workers back to the office later this year, but said it is considering a “hybrid” model. It also helps employees get vaccinated and encourages vaccination, but does not need to be vaccinated to return to the office, a spokeswoman said.
