Many have turned to video conferencing applications such as Zoomlately due to the coronavirus pandemic. However, for those who do not have a friend or colleague who can afford a Zoom subscription, the video chat experience is locked behind a 40-minute window, with a group chat limit of 100 people.

Zoom operates on a business model composed of four main planes. There is the free version which allows unlimited one-on-one calls with group calls of up to 40 minutes of 100 people. The Pro plan is $ 15 per month and allows 24-hour meetings for groups of up to 100. The business plan is $ 20 per month, per host and requires a minimum of 10 hosts – although it also increases the meeting attendee limit to 300. The final package is the corporate package, priced at $ 20 per month, per host with a minimum host limit of 100. In return, group calls can manage up to 500 users.

Although Zoom offers many options for organizations, if you use the service for occasional calls with family or friends, you may be more inclined to opt for the free version. The good news is that there are two ways to bypass the deadline, and while they are not perfect solutions, they allow you to chat longer, without having to pay a subscription.

How to avoid a Zoom subscription

The first option is simply to create a new call after the 40 minutes have expired. Although the call is operational again, it also means that the new room code and password will have to be sent again to each participant. This can be tedious and will most likely cause restart delays. However, this approach can be useful if you are concerned about Zoom bombing, although if you are concerned, you’d better start with one of the many other communications apps.

To get around the 40-minute limit more effectively, target a scheduled meeting instead of starting one. This means that whoever hosts the meeting will need to set it up before the meeting. To do this, click the calendar icon when you are logged in as a host. This will open a new tab where all the information for the meeting can be entered. Set the meeting time and date as needed, as well as all the video and audio settings, and in the bottom row (titled Calendar), click on the “Other Calendars” option before scheduling the meeting.

Once the meeting has started and is approaching this 40 minute limit, a clock will appear in the meeting and start the countdown. At this point, if the host leaves the meeting (making sure not to end the meeting for all), and everyone else clicks on the original invitation link, the 40-minute limit begins again.
