Alienware has announced a new laptop with AMD’s Ryzen Mobile 5000 family. Meanwhile, Dell has also added a new AMD gaming system to its own product matrix. For Alienware, this is the first time the company has offered AMD-powered products since 2007.

When AMD’s Ryzen Mobile 4000 failed to be adopted in many markets last year, there was concern that the company might have fallen victim to plans to block market share between Intel and Nvidia. There are several historical reasons people are afraid of this issue that AMD is concerned about, but the company has openly stated its own explanation. RyzenMobile4000 was a platform that showed OEMs the ability to take mobile competition seriously and develop possible products. Power high-end design.

The Ryzen Mobile 4000 is confident that various OEM AMDs can power high-end systems, so more Ryzen 5000 systems are being deployed this year. Even if the system used a Ryzen Mobile 3000 CPU instead of a 7nm Zen2 core, getting a Surface Laptop 3 also helped establish AMD’s qualifications.

Both the Alienware m15 Ryzen Edition R5 and Dell G15 Ryzen Edition offer Nvidia GeForce RTX 3000 series GPUs. The new Alienware system offers a display with a refresh rate of 240Hz (1440p) or 360Hz (1080p) “for smooth gameplay.” Such a phrase is a bit like the RTX 3090 “providing smooth 720p performance”. The problem with this statement is not that it is wrong in itself. It means you need the RTX 3090 to get smooth 720p performance in the first place.

Screens with a refresh rate of 60Hz are redrawn once every 16.6 milliseconds. At 120Hz, it redraws every 8.3ms. At 240Hz, every 4.15ms. At 360Hz, every 2.7ms. The ever-increasing numbers of Hz hide the fact that the higher the actual latency reduction, the smaller. The transition from 30Hz (33.3ms refresh rate) to 60Hz (16.6ms refresh rate) is a significant improvement over the transition from 60Hz to 360Hz. Keep in mind that the degree of difference seen in a particular title depends largely on the speed at which the game engine can initially run. There are many titles that won’t run at 240-360fps at 1080p or 1440p unless you deliberately break the advanced settings to maximize the frame rate.

There’s nothing wrong with Alienware selling the system to esports fanatics and tracking all the last frames, but you don’t need a refresh rate of 240-360Hz to “enable smooth gameplay.”

Alienware also claims that this is “the first user-upgradable 3200MHz DDR4 memory in an Alienware 15-inch notebook.” This is not a ridiculous truth. iFixit has multiple disassembly and documentation on how to upgrade RAM in various 15-inch Alienware systems manufactured over the last decade. Alienware has moved to soldered DRAM a few years ago and is trying to rotate this reversal as a new feature that will be added rather than restoring the expected baseline functionality.

Thankfully, the actual system design looks better than marketing. The Alienware m15 offers the Ryzen 7 5800H or Ryzen 9 4900HS in combination with the RTX 3060 or RTX 3070 starting at $ 1,794. The Dell G15 Ryzen Edition uses the Ryzen 5 5600H or Ryzen 7 5800H up to RTX 3060 and is reported to start at $ 900. The G15 is also available on 120Hz or 165Hz panels, with 360Hz panel options coming later this spring.

Those who buy a laptop with a display with a high refresh rate should be aware that these panels will completely chew the battery. Most games allow you to set the refresh rate in-game, but for some titles the refresh rate is locked to the refresh rate on your Windows desktop. I’m not sure if Windows provides a way to automatically reduce the refresh rate when using the battery. Therefore, it is recommended that anyone using AC above 60Hz double-check the panel settings before switching to batteries.

If you’re looking at a laptop, you’re probably planning to buy an OEM system no matter what, but due to the incredibly high prices of retail channel GPUs, OEM systems are in town as far as reasonable prices are concerned. It is the only game in. In this case, I’m dissatisfied with marketing, but I’ve previously tested both Dell and Alienware gaming PCs and am happy with the end result.
