Strasbourg earthquake over disputed geothermal project مشروع
A canceled geothermal project caused a 3.9-magnitude earthquake in the eastern city of Strasbourg, one of the latest and most powerful in a series of project shocks.
The epicenter of the quake, which began at 5 a.m., was 5 kilometers (about 3 miles) underground, under the northern suburb of La Wantzeno, according to France’s National Seismological Network (RENAS).
A follower of magnitude 2.3 was recorded on the Richter scale after five minutes. Both events have been classified by Renass as being “instigated” or caused by human activity.
While the shocks were not thought to have caused significant damage other than cracking people’s homes, they have reignited controversy over the geothermal project, which was halted late last year after a number of seismic accidents.
“It was really strong this time,” Alain Fontanel, an opposition leader in the Strasbourg city council, wrote on Twitter. “The whole house shook for a few seconds. Thanks to the cultivators of the profound geothermal energy for this impudent awakening.”
Fonroche Geothermie, the project’s developer, had previously admitted that its activities were the cause of some earthquakes and said Saturday’s event was also “related to the rebalancing” of subterranean geological structures.
The project has been linked to at least 15 earthquakes of magnitude 2.0 since November 2019.
Local authorities halted the geothermal project last December after a series of severe earthquakes, including a 3.5-magnitude quake three days prior to the halt order.
“We have continued to see continued seismic activity in recent months. The topsoil is taking some time to respond to the (project) halt,” Jerome Virigny, a seismologist at the School and Observatory of Earth Sciences in Strasbourg, told AFP. Press (AFP).
