San Jose Earthquakes splits from General Motors’ Jesse Fioranelli

Major League Soccer’s San Jose Earthquakes parted ways with general manager Jesse Fioranelli in effect immediately upon his announcement on Tuesday.

The search for a replacement will begin immediately, while coach Chris Leach, coach Matthias Almeida and the rest of the coaching staff continue their duties.

Fioranelli first arrived in San Jose four and a half years ago from Rome, hoping to develop the team’s youth academy into a nutrition system for the first team. After joining in 2017, Fioranelli led the team to a record 41-67-28 regular season and MLS Cup qualifiers in 2017 and 2020. The team expanded in 2008.

“Leaving is not easy because I have been very fortunate to work with such an amazing group of people whose priority has always been to put the club ahead,” Fioranelli said.

“I will always be thankful to John Fisher and the Board of Directors for the opportunity to serve the club. I would like to thank every player, coach, staff member and teammate, from the first team to the academy, and the front office with whom I have been involved for four and a half unforgettable years.

“Being able to watch the growth of our players, while working with Mathias on a unique path and football brand that go far beyond the tactics of the game, makes me hope to leave our club with a bright future ahead.

“I am taking with me invaluable learning moments from the experiences we made together on the field, with our fans and within the community. It has been an honor to embrace a greater cause with you.”

Despite the major distraction, club owner John Fisher insists the team’s focus remains on resolving a playoff. The Earthquakes are 11th at the Western Conference table with just 10 points in 11 games played.

“With the majority of the season remaining, our focus is on getting a place in the playoffs, and we have confidence that Matthias, our coaching staff and our players, who led us to the playoffs last year, can turn this around and make it happen,” Fischer said in a statement.
