‘It felt like an earthquake’: South Los Angeles residents describe an explosion of fireworks that injured 16

An attempt to detonate thousands of pounds of illegal fireworks seized from a home in south Los Angeles ended with an explosion that injured at least 16 people Wednesday evening, authorities said.

A South Los Angeles resident, who only asked to be identified as Kennery, said he lives across the street from where the explosion occurred and his windows were shattered by the impact of the blast.

“I didn’t think it was a firework. It looked like an earthquake,” Kennery said. “I have never felt a firework like this, it never shakes the whole house.”

The Los Angeles Police Department planned to set off firecrackers in one of their vehicles when the explosion occurred.

“It looked like an explosion, but it felt like an earthquake,” South Los Angeles resident Jasmine Vasquez told KTLA.

“It was crazy. I was in my mom’s room and I heard it and I got scared,” Brandon Vasquez told KTLA.

The Los Angeles Fire Department said the car was destroyed and the windows of local shops were smashed, and at least 16 people were injured in the blast.

The 16 victims were taken to a local hospital for treatment.

They included nine LAPD officers, all in reasonable condition with minor injuries; One officer in the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, transported in reasonable condition with minor injuries; 6 civilians, 3 of whom were seriously injured and 3 were lightly injured, according to the Lebanese Armed Forces.
