Earthquake-affected Port Hills land in the last move the crown to the board

About 80 hectares of earthquake-damaged land in Port Hills in Christchurch has been transferred to City Council.

The Minister for Land Information, Damien O’Connor, announced the latest transfer of red lands owned by the Royal Crown today.

It is part of a progressive process, with the transfer of ownership of the land from Te Whenua Land Information New Zealand (LINZ) to the council, which began last year.

“It builds on last year’s relocation of areas in Brooklands, South Shore and southern New Brighton, along with Bill Sutton’s historic home in the Atakaro Avon River Corridor,” O’Connor said.

He said the Crown moved about 440 of its Port Hills properties to Christchurch City Council after the 2010 earthquakes left them at risk of rockfalls, landslides and cliff collapses.

The property spread across the Port Hills from Whitewash Head in Scarborough Hill to Charteris Bay and included parts of Lyttelton, Sumner, Redcliffs and Cashmere.

“In the past 10 years, the Crown has completed around 400 demolitions of earthquake-damaged properties in the region, many of which were highly complex and used innovative technologies.

“In addition, we have grown nearly 50,000 native plants – which has helped boost biodiversity across Port Hills – and have supported numerous projects and events.”

The Canterbury Earthquake Recovery Authority made LINZ responsible for the earthquake-damaged land owned by the Crown Prince in 2015.

The transfer of land is under the Global Settlement Agreement concluded in September 2019, a contract between the Crown and the Council to terminate the remaining costs and responsibilities of Christchurch earthquake recovery.
