Radioactive wild boars roam the area near the Fukushima nuclear disaster

Hybrid wild boar pigs have been roaming around Fukushima since the 2011 Japanese nuclear disaster that turned the area into a barren wasteland.

A new hybrid of radioactive pigs was created when wild boars roamed the vacated area to raise local pigs that had escaped from farms, according to a study published Wednesday in the Journal of the Royal Society.

“Although the radiation did not cause a genetic effect, invasive domestic pig species did,” Donovan Anderson, a researcher at Fukushima University, told the BBC.

The researchers found that the nuclear disaster, triggered by a massive earthquake and tsunami, led to a “biological invasion” of the genes of domestic pigs, which were “diluted” over time by pigs, which saw their numbers rise in the absence of humans.

Anderson explained to the outlet, “I think pigs weren’t able to survive in the wild, but pigs thrived in abandoned cities – because they’re so strong.”

The researchers studied DNA samples from 243 domestic pigs and found that 16 percent of the wild boars from the abandoned area were crossbreeds.

Scientists predicted that people who started returning to the radioactive zone over the past few years now have a new danger to contend with.

“Humans are really the only predators of these wild boars,” Anderson said. “So when people come back, it’s going to be really fun to see what the pig does.”
