Darwin was rocked by a 6.9-magnitude earthquake

Darwin residents reported the swaying buildings feeling overnight after a 6.9-magnitude earthquake struck the Banda Sea.

The epicenter of the earthquake was in the Banda Sea, north of Timor-Leste, at around 11:27 p.m. Wednesday, and sparked reports of major tremors in the city of Top End.

The Australian Earth Sciences Company said the earthquake occurred at a depth of 142 kilometers at sea.

The Australian government’s meteorological office said there was no threat of a tsunami on the mainland, Australian islands or territories.

Residents all over Darwin, Palmerston and even as far as Howards Springs reported their homes were shaking and moving furniture during the earthquake on Facebook.

One of the people said: “Our apartment was on the 25th floor in the city, swaying and cracking.”

Another said: “Yes, the bed was shivering! The ripple of the pool, the aquarium, and the gum were scary.”

David Batman, a nightclub resident, said he couldn’t believe how long the earthquake lasted.

“I was pretty much in bed, and I woke up with a deep roar, at first I had no idea what was going on and I sat down to see the water bottle shaking. Then almost everything shook and the voice of the murmur rose,” he said.

“It felt a few minutes for me, while it woke me up while I was standing at the door and I still felt shaking the house. It was the third or fourth that I felt living in the region for 10 years and the best one easily.”

The people living in Dundee, 59 km southwest of Darwin, felt the tremors.

“I felt the first and second tremors, giving poor old dongas here in Dundee a good old wobble while dogs were racing outside and with the dogs nearby barking their breasts,” said one resident.
