The Waka sculpture in the wake of the Canterbury earthquakes is on display again

A waka sculpture by Ricky Manuel was displayed in Market Square at Christchurch Arts Center in 2013.

A waka carved using timber reclaimed from buildings demolished after the 2011 Canterbury earthquake is on display in Christchurch for the first time in eight years.

Mr. Carver and Tohunga Muko (Maori tattoo expert) sculpted Ricky Manuel Waka in 2013 from two lengths of kauri recovered from a destroyed building downtown.

Te Waka Whaka Hou (The Canoe of the Rebuild) will be shown to the public for the first time since 2013 in the North Quarter of Christchurch Center for the Arts from Monday.

Ricky Manuel is a nationally famous Maori carver and moko artist.

One of the logs was a broken balcony post with a torn and torn base. Manuel kept the splinter piece.

“I wanted to leave that in the back of the waka as a reminder of the earthquakes, and then as you go forward, it completes,” he said.

“The sculptures in the foreground are all forward-looking people.

It was about a hopeful future.

“She was trying to reflect the carnage and the disappointment with the earthquake – the damage done to everything and then move on.”

All the figures carved into the front of the waka face forward as a symbol of recovery from the Canterbury earthquake.

Waka’s sails were old New Zealand Railroad coverings, which were used to protect materials in the salvage yard.

“I said I want those, but not what’s under them,” Manuel said.

“They still have New Zealand Railways stamped on them. It has whakapapa.”

He said that a project to create a waka in 2013, funded by the Todd Foundation, allowed him to work at a difficult time.

“There was no work. We who lived here were all in a state of uncertainty.

“It was just a positive thing for us to get back to work. It was a start.”

Manuel was delighted that the Arts Center had chosen to return the waka to display.

“I like to think that when I make something, the value is in the people looking at it and it’s entertaining,” he said.

“You don’t make them locked up.”

Philip Aldridge, CEO of the Arts Centre, said the waka is on display as part of the Al Matariki festivities. It’s been in stock at the Arts Center since it premiered in 2013.

He has about 400 chisels, which he’s been collecting since he was twelve.

Ricky used to hold his workshop here before the earthquakes.

“It’s good to have that connection with Ricky and Matariki and to acknowledge to Christchurch and the Arts Center that Matariki is of increasing importance.”

He said that Waka told the story of the Canterbury earthquakes.

“It tells the story of moving forward from this tremendous strength of Romoko in the earthquake.”
