‘Near zero’ chance of finding Florida avalanche victims alive

An Israeli colonel leading a rescue team at the site of a building collapse in Florida said on Sunday there was a “close to zero” chance of finding survivors under the rubble.

“I now think the chances are close to zero, unfortunately,” Colonel Golan Fach told WPLG-TV in an interview Sunday.

“The conditions that we’ve seen in the last couple of days are very difficult for me to say professionally that I think there is a strong chance of finding someone alive,” Faak said.

He said that despite reports that some survivors of the deadly 2010 earthquake in Haiti were found alive a week or more later, that is unlikely to be the case here 10 days later.

Fach said rescue crews had been honest about disagreements with relatives of the missing victims, who they hoped were being accommodated in a nearby hotel.

Officials said 24 people were confirmed dead at the site of the June 24 collapse of a beachfront apartment building in Surfside, while 121 were still missing.

Fach is part of an Israeli national rescue unit sent to the site to aid in the recovery effort, with seven team members scheduled to remain at Surfside in anticipation of demolishing an unstable portion of the still-standing building.

Officials said the demolition would take place on Sunday evening.

The Israeli crew joined hundreds of first responders from across the United States who flocked to the scene to assist in the rescue effort.

Fach said Sunday it was a joint and committed process.
