Magnitude 5.2 earthquake hits Assam, quake felt in Meghalaya, West Bengal – The New Indian Express

Guwahati – A 5.2-magnitude earthquake hit Assam on Wednesday morning and was felt by residents in neighboring Meghalaya and northern parts of West Bengal along with Bangladesh.

A report by the National Center of Seismology said the quake was recorded at 8.45 am, with its epicenter in Golpara in Lower Assam state at a depth of 14 km.

The deputy director of the Regional Center of Meteorology, Sanjay O’Neill Shaw, said the site of the accident was 71 kilometers north of Tora in Meghalaya, and the earthquake was felt there as well.

People in lower Assam districts, including Guwahati and Meghalaya, fled their homes in panic.

The quake was also felt in the northern districts of West Bengal, including Alipurdwar and Jalpaiguri.

And local media reported that parts of Bangladesh, including Dhaka, Jaibandha, Bogora and Rajshahi, were also shocked.

Officials said there were no immediate reports of any injuries or property damage.

Northeast India is located in the high seismic zone, which makes earthquakes strike the region frequently.

A 6.4-magnitude earthquake shook the region on April 28.
