Aftershocks are expected after a 6.0-magnitude earthquake hits California, Nevada

A 6.0-magnitude quake hit both sides of the California and Nevada border, hurling boulders onto a major road and felt by people as far away as Las Vegas and even San Francisco, authorities said, with days of aftershocks expected.

The epicenter of the earthquake, which occurred just before 4 p.m. Thursday, was south of Lake Tahoe near Walker, a rural area of ​​a few hundred families in the eastern Sierra Nevada. Authorities said there were no reports of serious damage or injuries.

Dozens of aftershocks followed, including at least half a dozen of magnitude 4 or higher, according to the US Geological Survey.

“The ground was shaking really hard, and then everything started to fall,” said Carolina Estrada, director of Walker Coffee Company. Drink bottles shattered, dishes fell to the floor and the roof of the shop collapsed a little.

She said the shaking lasted 30 seconds or more.

“We ran out of the building,” Estrada said. The shaking continued, she said, and “car-sized boulders” fell on 395 US aircraft nearby.

The California Highway Patrol said the boulders crashed into some cars, but there were no injuries. A video recording of the drivers showed cars slowly driving around large blocks of stones scattered on the road.

At one point, rockfalls closed about 40 miles (64 kilometers) of the highway, a major road through the northern Sierra Nevada, but the road reopened a few hours later.

The boxes flew off the shelves at Smith’s Food and Drug in Gardnerville, Nevada.

“Our whole store was shivering,” said Brittany Oswald, who works in a deli. “I just stood there and grabbed a table, and waited for it to finish.”

The seismic waves spread across the eastern Sierra — where thousands of people camp and hike in national forests — westward through California’s agricultural Central Valley and were felt about 250 miles (402 kilometers) away in San Francisco. Sacramento also felt the shaking and so did Las Vegas, about the same distance southeast of Walker.

“People in the area should expect aftershocks for days after an earthquake of this magnitude,” said Jason Balman of the University of Southern California’s Southern California Seismic Center.

Balmain cautioned that reports of damage or injury may not be available for days because much of the shaking was felt in the outback.

The earthquake occurred along the Antelope Valley Fault, which runs across the state line near Lake Topaz. Seismologists said earthquakes are not uncommon there. In the month of Vegas, a 5.8-magnitude earthquake struck the town of Lone Pine in the eastern Sierra, sending boulders down Mt. Whitney.

However, Thursday’s quake was the largest since a 6.1-magnitude earthquake hit the region in 1994.
