6.0 earthquake in Walker Canyon | North Mon County

Walker, California has had more than his share of excitement over the past year between the fire and the earthquake now

On Thursday afternoon at 3:49 p.m., a 6.0-magnitude earthquake was reported 70 miles northwest of Mammoth Mountain and 40 miles southeast of Lake Tahoe, temporarily closing Highway 395 as rockslides sent large boulders out. On the road along Walker Canyon which had to be cleared by road crews.

Fortunately, this is a sparsely populated area in northern Mono County and there have been no reports of injuries or serious damage to infrastructure according to Leader Rich Nalder of Antelope Valley Fire Protection, which serves the Walker District.

There was a report of some damage in the Walker Country Store. A refrigerator flipped over and things fell off the shelves, making a mess of broken glass and the contents of the containers.

A series of smaller earthquake aftershocks have been reported.

There are many active faults in the eastern Sierra and Californians are familiar with them. Most are small, but everyone is always worried about the “big,” the San Andreas Fault which, if large, could cause widespread devastation in many urban areas.

The earthquake was reported in Walker, some distance from Sacramento.
