At least one person was reported killed and seven injured, when an earthquake of 5.1 magnitude struck northern Iran early Friday (20:18 GMT on Thursday), according to the Iranian Ministry of Health.

Health Ministry spokesman Kyanosh Jahanpur wrote on social media early Friday that a person had died in the eastern part of Tehran while trying to escape from the earthquake.

A resident of the Iranian capital told the island that the ground shaking was “very strong.”

Several aftershocks have been reported.

According to the United States Geological Survey (USGS), the epicenter was in Damavand, just northeast of the capital, at a depth of 10 km (6.2 mi).
