An earthquake jolts southern Puerto Rico and displaces at least 50 families
An earthquake of magnitude 5.4 struck Puerto Rico on Saturday morning, causing damage to facilities near Ponce and the cities of Guanica and Guyana.
According to the Associated Press, the earthquake has displaced at least 50 families.
The shocks were felt in the aftermath of the event, according to Evoni Rodriguez-Yewal, Puerto Rico’s direct relief advisor in Puerto Rico.
“It is bad. There is a lot of structural damage, a lot of houses have been completely destroyed, a lot of people live outside in tents.” Rodriguez Yewal said, referring to the earthquakes that shook the island earlier this year.
A number of IDPs formed improvised camps, one of them in an unused baseball field. Some of them even lack basic supplies – including enough food, Rodriguez Yual explained.
Some of them do not eat up to three times a day. She said, “Some have lost their jobs.”
On May 6, direct relief workers distributed hygiene kits, solar powered bulbs, batteries, and other essential supplies to people – many of them elderly – who were displaced by the earthquake.
Puerto Rico is currently closed due to the Covid-19 crisis, which has made it difficult for earthquake-affected people to receive assistance.
In response to the epidemic, Direct Relief has provided personal protection equipment, intensive care unit supplies and screening and testing tents to hospitals and health centers. The organization also provides hospitals with ventilation equipment, video throat binoculars and other required equipment.
In addition, Direct Relief funds funding test initiatives, including in senior care centers and driving test sites. Provision of tents and personal protective equipment to the Ministry of Health of Puerto Rico; and coordination of a telehealth initiative designed to connect 200,000 remote patients to safety net providers.
Direct relief personnel deliver personal care items to residents who have been displaced from their homes on May 6.
The earthquake is the latest in a series of seismic activity that has struck the island since late December last year. In particular, a January 6, 6.4-magnitude earthquake caused blackouts and running water shortages, and damaged more than 8,000 homes.
The earthquake and associated seismic activity have displaced thousands of Puerto Ricans, many of whom sleep in their corridors, in shelters, or in improvised camps.
In the aftermath of the event, and at the request of the Puerto Rican Ministry of Health, Direct Relief provided medicines and essential supplies to equip 10 teams of medical providers, and worked to coordinate medical services in Guánica.
During the distribution of supplies on May 6, Rodriguez-Wiewall faced a number of families living in tents since January.
They told her that while they saw aid flow when earthquakes started, they have slowed down ever since.
Rodriguez Yewall said the closure was partly responsible. As well as the lack of media attention.
“In January and February, there was a lot of news about this. You will see the highway heading towards Ponce to the bumper with the people bringing aid to the south.” But now with the closure, the aid has stopped. “
According to the U.S. Geological Survey, the most recent activity was actually a aftershock of a 6.4 magnitude earthquake. The US Geological Survey said in a survey that “the earthquake is part of a strong series in the same region that included hundreds of small earthquakes.”
Because the Richter scale is logarithmic, the 6.4 earthquake is actually approximately ten times larger and 32 times stronger than the 5.4-magnitude earthquake that occurred on Saturday, as determined by the USGS calculator.
However, Saturday’s earthquake and subsequent shocks caused great damage, briefly cut off electrical power and damaged a number of homes and other facilities. Rodriguez Yewall said that homes in the affected cities were marked red, yellow or green to indicate their relative safety level.
Direct relief is committed to assisting people affected by earthquakes, whether with immediate or long-term needs. The organization will continue to monitor the situation and respond as needed.
