At about 9 a.m. Friday, people living between West Covina, Long Beach and Santa Monica felt a shake. The LA earthquake is back to life on Twitter, as usual. But check out the list of the latest earthquakes from the USGS, and you will see that there is no earthquake to be found.

That’s because it wasn’t an earthquake, but a sonic explosion that originated in San Dimas, according to an assessment from the US Geological Survey.

Sound booms occur when aircraft exceed the speed of sound – about 760 miles per hour at sea level. As they move faster and faster, planes violently push air molecules out of their way, creating shock waves that can take up to 60 seconds to be heard on the ground.

Edwards Air Force Base is nearby, and they happen to have a whole page on noisy bridges and sound barriers, though they neither confirm nor deny whether they are.

One investigator noted on Twitter that this weekend the F-18s will fly out of Long Beach for training.

Although it wasn’t an earthquake, it’s still a good time to be prepared for it.
