Israel elections: Netanyahu and opponent headed to the border – BBC News

Unofficial results in Israel’s second election in five months suggest that the call is very close, Israeli media say.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and the main opponent of Benny Gantz have 32 seats around their necks, public broadcaster Kan says.

A prime minister must run for a 61-seat majority in parliament. The small party of Yisrael Beiteinu seems to maintain a balance of power.

Partial official results are expected Wednesday morning.

Benjamin Netanyahu, Israel’s longest-serving prime minister, has been in office for 10 years and has a fifth term.

The 69-year-old leader of the right-wing Likud party has pledged Jewish settlements and the turmoil of another territory if he returns to power in the occupied West Bank.
