Documents and physical evidence indicate that a major earthquake struck Visegrad in Hungary, which was once the home of kings.

Scientific research has found evidence that a major earthquake in the 16th century severely damaged an ancient Hungarian city – a city close to the proposed modern dam site.

In 1977, Czechoslovakia and Hungary agreed to build two large dams on the Danube, one on both sides of the international border. The project became mired in political and environmental conflicts and was never completed.

Miklós Kázmer of Eötvös University in Budapest and colleagues surveyed the medieval town of Visegrád, near the site of a proposed Hungarian dam. The Salmon Tower in Visegrád has been extensively reconstructed, but researchers have found drawings and photos from the 19th century that show a large vertical crack running through all six floors of the tower. The crack is similar to that caused by the strong shaking of the ground during an earthquake.

Nearby, the authors mapped a giant depression in a 15th-century monastic floor—evidence that the soil moved like a liquid during an earthquake. The historical account states that a major earthquake occurred in the region in August 1541.

The team concluded that the seismic risk near the proposed dam site is higher than previously expected and higher than was calculated in the dam planning.
