Small earthquake in southwest Virginia Wednesday evening

(WOW) – A small earthquake occurred in southwest Virginia tonight with a magnitude of 2.7. The initial report showed a strength of 2.6 but was revised to 2.7.

The epicenter of the small earthquake was located a few hundred feet off the Appalachian Trail along Sugar Run Mountain in Giles County, Virginia, about 6 miles south of Narrows, Virginia. The quake occurred at 8:55 p.m. EDT and the actual depth of the quake was 18.5 kilometers, or 11.5 miles underground.

Not many people reported feeling the earthquake to the USGS. Shake Map as it is known shows only a few reports from the public so far but this number may increase.

Earthquakes have occurred in this area before with much greater magnitude including the famous earthquake in 1897 that shook Giles County and surrounding areas with a magnitude 5.9 earthquake.

The USGS says small earthquakes occur in this region of the Appalachians from ancient faults buried deep below the surface.

The seismic zone is riddled with known faults, but many smaller or deeply buried faults remain undiscovered. Even known faults fall into disrepair at the depths of an earthquake. Accordingly, few, if any, earthquakes in the seismic zone can be associated with named faults. It is difficult to determine if a known fault is still active and could slip and cause an earthquake. As in most other areas east of the Rocky Mountains, the best evidence for seismic hazards in the seismic zone is the earthquakes themselves.

The Giles County Sheriff’s Department told 13 News they had not received any calls with damages or injuries.
