The Alaska region is building a $33 million high school to replace facilities destroyed by the earthquake

A $300 million donation to the University of California, Berkeley will pay for the construction of a 14-story apartment building for 772 students.

The residence hall, called Anchor House, will house transfer students, Berkeleyside reports. Funds for student housing are provided by the Helen Diller Family Foundation.

In addition to building 772 beds, the Anchor House will include approximately 17,000 square feet of commercial and commercial space. The goal is to use the net revenue from rentals to create scholarships for students to help with housing costs, which are about $14,221 annually.

The rooms will have large windows, kitchens, and washers and dryers built into each unit and common space. The hall will also contain an 8,600-square-foot gym with yoga and meditation rooms.

Outside the auditorium, students can enjoy a central courtyard and roof garden where they can grow their own vegetables.

Mobile students will be provided with a designated area where they can rest, shower, store their belongings or use a computer while on campus.

The Anchor House project was envisioned to meet the needs of transfer students, many of whom have fewer resources to move around in California than other students, according to the university. The university says that in 2020-2021, 4,779 students transferred to UC Berkeley, and the vast majority came from California community colleges.

Construction is scheduled to begin in November. The Anchor House is expected to open in 2024.
