Meteorological School: What happens during an earthquake?

At 7:09 AM Malaysia, we shook a 5.7 magnitude earthquake! We are here in the newsroom in the middle of post-show Good Morning Utah updates when the entire newsroom has started to shift and vibrate. We looked at each other and either we dived under our desks or faced a corridor, no matter how close we were, we knew we should be safe and follow the seismic protocol. Now I lived in Los Angeles for a few years and I am aware of earthquakes, but this was much stronger!

I quickly searched the USGS website (usgs.gov) and waited for updates. Everyone stayed on the ground floor, but we heard the sound of shattering glass and ceiling panels. The lights went out and it was dark, but we were all able to go to the studio, the weather center, and refresh you all at home.

After updating several times, the data was present. The magnitude of the earthquake was 5.7 degrees, and although it was considered a “moderate” earthquake on the Richter scale (usgs.gov), we felt much more “moderate” for all of us.

Depending on the location, the University of Utah seismologists explain that the main earthquake could have been felt anywhere from 4 to 20 seconds, although I am sure it has felt us for a longer time.
