Food from areas affected by the 2011 Great East Japan Earthquake and Tsunami is being served to the Olympic Games in Tokyo.

However, a participant in the Tokyo 2020 official online session on food ingredients from the affected regions refused to reveal details of what is being served.

The show was part of a program presented by the Recovery and Reconstruction Wing at the main press center at Big Sight in Tokyo.

Nobuaki Kasai, director of Kasai Nosan, a company that produces vegetables in Iwate Prefecture, said through an interpreter, “Since Japan is hosting the Olympic and Paralympic Games this time, I talked to my farming colleagues that we will also participate in the Olympics by obtaining a certificate. Mr. Kasai was asked for details about the product his company is providing for the Olympic Games.

He replied, “I am afraid there is a duty of confidentiality and I cannot disclose what products are being offered or to whom.”

Mr. Kasai invoked the concept of sustainability for games.

“By taking advantage of these Olympics and Paralympics as a good opportunity, I hope to continue working towards the concept of ‘Be Better Together’.”

A Miyagi winery manager and a representative of Fukushima farmers also participated in the show as part of a campaign to promote the region’s recovery.

“The Olympics and Paralympics will be a great opportunity to get to know the reality of Fukushima and get a familiar feel for the place,” said Noboru Saito, representative of NPO Ganbaro Fukushima, the unit for Fukushima farmers and supporters.
