Japan Earthquake: A 5.8 magnitude earthquake hits the eastern coast of Honshu | The World News

The earthquake struck near the eastern coast of Honshu at 23.58 UTC on Sunday. The quake was reported to have reached a depth of 80 km. It also hit 129 km northeast of Saitama and 26 km southeast of Hitachi, according to the emsc-csem earthquake tracking website. USGS tweeted: “The M5.8 Brillam earthquake near the east coast of Honshu, Japan 10 May 23:58 UTC.”

The residents stated that they felt tremors from the earthquake.

One person said: “I shook the building for two minutes. I live in Tokorozawa Shi.”

Another added: “Very smooth at first, then more vibration.

“It lasted about 20 seconds. Kita-Ku, Tokyo.”

A third witness said: “I saw a slow wobble of hanging things about 20 seconds after the alarm, and it continued for another 10-20 seconds.”

The Japan Meteorological Agency said the epicenter was off the coast of Ibaraki Prefecture, north of Tokyo.

No tsunami warning was issued and there were no immediate reports of damage or injuries.

This comes after a 5.2 magnitude earthquake struck just 50 miles from Fukushima, a country of 300,000 people, in February.

Japan also struck by a 9-magnitude earthquake on March 11, 2011.
